Canada's Time of Decline

  • Hillcrest Mine Coal Dust Explosion in Hillcrest, Alberta (-1)

    This was the biggest coal mining disaster at the time and still is. 184 out of the 228 workers were killed due to a gas explosion in the mines. This was a social change because it left about 90 woman widowed and around 250 children without a father.
  • Britain declares war on Germany, automatically drawing Canada into the conflict (-2)

    Since Canada and Britain were close allies when Britain declared war amongst Germany, Canada was automatically brought to join Britain in which was called the Great War. This was a negative impact for all Canadians and the country. This is includes all the changes.
  • Forest fire ignited by lightning destroys towns of Cochrane, Ontario and Matheson, Ontario (-1)

    What was known as the great Matheson fire was a deadly forest fire that took place in Ontario. 233 people were killed from the 49,000 acres of fire that spread across many communities. This is an economic change because it costed a lot of money to fix the damage done to the communities.
  • Borden government introduces military service bill, leading to a conscription crisis dividing French and English Canada. (-2)

    There was much disagreement between the French and English Canadians on if conscription was a good idea or bad. The French Canadians disagreed while the English thought it was a good idea. This disagreement caused a social change because it tore apart our relationships across Canada.
  • Robert Borden Announces Conscription. (-1)

    Conscription was enlisting men and woman in the military service against their own will and was forced to fight or serve the military. This was a political change because it was new act introduced by the government.
  • Canadians Capture Passchendaele (+1)

    This was called the battle of Passchendaele. Passchendaele was an infamous village surrounded by terrible and harsh conditions of a battlefield. After the long battle the Canadians were victorious in capturing the village. This was a social change due to the many soldiers that lost their live for this victory.
  • Halifax Explosion (-2)

    This explosion was caused from the crashing of two major ships and caused damage across most of Halifax. Around 2000 people died with almost 8000 facing injuries. It also caused many shelters to be destroyed which left many of people of Halifax to be homeless. This was both an economic and social change because the large amount of money spent for damages and and lives lost.
  • Influenza Outbreak Hits Canada (-2)

    Influenza was a very strong virus that was spread across Canada and was said to kill more people then the Great War. The flu like virus killed near 50,000 Canadians between the time of 1918-1919. This is a social change because it was a big factor for a population and society.
  • Private George Price shot and killed by a German sniper (-1)

    George Price was a Canadian soldier and was known as the last soldier of the British empire to be killed. It was a big lost for the country because he was a strong soldier with lots of heart. This was a social change because his death was a big deal to the population of Canada.
  • First Women Allowed to Run for Office (+2)

    This was the first election where woman were allowed to both vote and run as candidates. Four woman ran and Agnes Campbell MacPhail was the first woman to be elected in the house of commons. This was both a political change and a social change because it changed woman rights in politics and in society.
