Quebec's Padlock Law
The padlock law was made to protect Quebec from all communist propaganda. The law gave power to government officials to shut down any buildings or meeting places suspected of communist acts. The law also gave immense power to the attourney general in any court matters about the padlock law, so the government always had their way. By many people this law was considered one of the most repressive and most biased laws for the government for the reasons listed above. -
Spies in Canada: Gouzenko Affair
Igor Gouzenko's daughter speaksA soviet spy working in Canada trying to steal information on the atomic bombs, defected on September 5. His name was Igor Gouzenko. He was about to be sent back to Russia to report on his discoveries, but he decided to share his secret Russian documents with Canada exposing tons of russian spie work and locations. -
Berlin Blockade
The Soviet Union tried to block all the supplies from getting to Berlin by building a wall. Thier attepmt failed because the allies ended up flying the supplies into Berlin. The main outcome of this situation was simply that it raised tension between the allies (U.S. and allied countries) and the Sviet Union. It was a contributing spark to the war and o the start of espionage of plans, and information. The raised tension forced Canada and the United States discuss defensive plans. -
Formation of NATO
NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It was formed between Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Luxemborg, Netherlands, Portugal, and the United States. NATO was a defensive pact to protect against the Soviets. All members defend eachother which supposedly makes for a lesser likelihood of soviet attacks. -
Korean War (forgotten war)
korean war documentaryNorth Korea and China decided to attack South Korea on June 25, 1950. The United States supported South Korea against the Communist attack. Canada, being an allie of the U.S. helped out and contributed alot. Only 16 members of NATO responded to the call, Canada ranked 3rd in total aid to South Korea. We gave 25000 troops to fight in the war, and 1000 were wounded with 400 killed before the truce in 1953. Candians stayed until 1955 to maintain the truce. -
Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw pact was the equivalent of NATO for Europeen communist countries. It was between Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union. It sparked the arms race and nuclear buildup whick Canadians saw as insanity, so they refused to have nuclear weapons on Canadian soil. -
Vietnam war
Canada was not directly involved in conflict of Vietnam. Troops were only snet to maintain peace in Paris. They were however, in charge of overseeing Geneva agreements. Canada wanted to avoid conflict so they tried to aid south Vietnam into avoiding war, but Americans had slightly different views. The effort only made the relationship worse. -
Suez Crisis
suez crisisThe Arabs didn't agree with the creation of Israel for the Jews, so they went to battle. The Jews won, but the Arabs swore revenge. In 1956 there was an argument over natural resources in Israel and middle East. The Americans and allies sided with Israel, and the Soviet Union sided with the Arabs. The Suez canal connected seas, and Egypt decided to take it over. Pearson Came up with a plan to end the condlict and develop an U.N. peacekeeping force to monitor the canal and keep it neutral. -
Pearson wins Nobel Prize
Pearson wins peace prize Pearson was awarded the Nobel peace prize for helping resolve the Suez Crisis. He sent 800 Canadians to maintain peace which was by far the largest contribution by any country. -
Sputnik and Canada's Space program
Sputnik launch Sputnik was not a problem or concern to the Canadians. However, the rocket that launched it was. The rocket was capable of carrying a nuclear missile anywhere in North America. The crisis inspired the U.S. and Canada to pour billions into space research and defense to prevent the possiblilty of the attack. -
NORAD and the DEW line
Dew line legacy North American Air Defence Agreement was that Canada and the U.S. agreed to defend eachother from air attacks. The Distant Early Warning system worked with NORAD to dectect enemy aircraft. Some Canadians objected to the idea because the U.S. controlled all decisions for Canada and had weapon control. But other Canadians liked the sense of protection. -
Avro Arrow and its Cancellation
First flightThe Avro Arrow was a super high-tech fighter jet developped and built entirely by Canadians. Prime Minister Diefenbaker decided to cancel the production to instead build Bomarc defense missiles. This had a huge effect on Canadians especially in Quebec. 14 000 lost their jobs and the economy slowed. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Nuclear missiles were being built in Cuba by the Soviets. Americans devised a plan to build a blockade around the island of Cuba to cut off delivery of weapons. All other allies agreed with the plan except Canada. Canadian government said they should send investigators instead of blockade. The U.S didn't listen, but their plan worked and the crisis ended safely. -
Draft Dodgers
Sam roberts songDraft dodgers running from conscription in the U.S. seeked refuge in canada so not to join the war. At first Canada did not accept them, but by 1968, Canada passed a law that required them not to allow refugees in. -
Canada-Soviet hockey series
paul hendersonSummit series was the hockey series between Canada and the Russians. Russia constantly beat Canada in the olympics so it was their chance at redemption. Series was even at 3-3 going to Moscow for game 7 and 8. In the final minute Paul Henderson scored the game winner in game 8 giving Canada the series. Huge snese of National Pride for Canada. -
Fall of the Berlin Wall
Berlin Wall was the division between West Berlin and East Germany from 1961 to 1989 and the boundary between democracy and Communism. The East Germans began to go West. A East German government official said the borders were open, and the wall slowly chipped away as the Germans celebrated their freedom. After the Berlin Wall came down, East and West Germany beacam one united German state. -
Fall of the Soviet Union
USSR was shut down and ended on December 26, 1991. Members of the Soviet Union gave independence of the twelve republics of the Soviet Union that created the Commonwealth of Independent States. On Christmas day, Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev had resigned. The Soviet flag was taken off and replaced with the flag of Russia.
