Quebec's Padlock Law
Events leading to the Padlock LawThe Quebec Padlock Law was an act to protect the province from Communist Propaganda. It began on March 24, 1937. The law prohibited anyone from making use of a house to propagate communisn of bolshevism by an means of behaviour. If this law was violated the property was closed by the attourney general and any person involved could be incarcerated for 3 to 13 months. This law greatly interfered with the reight to freedom of speech. -
Spies In Canada: Gouzenko Affair
Gouzenko's Testimony ReleasedIgor Gouzenko was a Cipher clerk for the Soviet Embassy to Canada. When he disocvered his family may be sent back to the Soviet Union, he gathered all secret codes and documents and hended them over to the RCMP in return having protection for his family. Information from Gouzenko led to the arrest of 18 Soviet spies in Canada. -
Berlin Blockade
Birth of NATOThe Berlin Blockade was put in place with the idea of the Soviet Union gaining control of West Berlin. Instead the blockade ruined a few alliances but it led to a new alliance. The National Atlantic Treaty Organization. This group included Canada, Britain as well as the USA and many others. -

Birth of NATO North Atlantic Treaty Organization began on April 4, 1949. The main purpose was that all states agreed to mutual defense in response to an extternal party. The NATO headquarters was in Brussels, Belgium. The idea of the group was a "partnership for peace". Having Canada join this group provided us with a sense of safety and belonging. -

Canadians in the Korean WarCanadians had a large impact on the Korean war. Though they were few in number they still had a large impact. The showed many acts of bravery especially in the Battle of Kapyong. It was only the Candians and the Australians at this point but they stood up against the Chinese which led to later breeak throughs on the United Nations Command front. -

A peak at the DEW lineThe Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line began on February 15 1954 The DEW Line was designed, built and used during the Cold War. It was Made up of radar stations that were able to detetct any missiles or aircrafts. The DEW line was created as a defence mechanism toward any bombings from the Soviet Union. It was located in Northern Arctic region of Canada. -

Lester B. Pearson, A HeroLester B. Pearson was the Prime Minister of Canada from April 22, 1963- April 20, 1968. He organzied the United Nations Emergency Force to stop the Suez Crisis, As a result he won the Nobel Peace Prize. Because of his efforts the Canal was full reopened for shipping in April of 1957. -

Canada's First SatelliteSputnik was the first Artificial Earth Satellite it led to the beginning of the space race, which was a between the USA and the USSR. They raced to gain superiority in space technoloy and knowledge. Canada was the third Country to send a satellite into space when we sent the Allouet. -

The Arrow was designed as an interceptor to any enemy threats. While the Arrow was being built Diefenbaker took over power. The building of the arrow took so long, as it was a very complicated process, eventually the need for the arrow was no longer changed and the entire project was cancelled. -

The Bomarc MissileThe Bomarc Missile was built to repace the Avro Arrow, It was an interceptor designed to protect North America during the cold war. Its first test flight was on August 10, 1952 and it was finally introduced on September 1, 1958. It retired on October 1, 1972. Difenbaker did not like the idea of the Bomarc missile initially because it was supposed to have a nuclear warhead. He decided the war heads were inneccesary. -

Cuban Missile CrisisThis is known as the time in the Cold war that was closest to nuclear conflict. It was a conflict between the soviet Union and Cuba, And the US. As a result the Soviet Union withdrew their Missiles from Cuba, and the U.S. removed theirs from Italy and Turkey. Throughought the entire crisis Diefenbaker;s only plan of action was to send a few advisors to get a better look at the situation. -

Vietnam War Draft Dogers were men that were trying to avoid conscription. To avoid this they would sneak into Canada. When they were in Canada and their home coutry found out they would ask us to send them back, but we never did. -
Summit Series: Canada vs. Soviet
Game 8 This was a series of eight ice hockey games, the first four were held in Canada and the next four were held in Moscow. USSR won 3 of these games, but Canada won 5. This provided Canada with a great sense of nationalism. -
Fall of the Soviet Union
The Soviet Socialist Republices officially ended on December 26, 1991 after President Mikhail Gorbachev stepped down from his position and the group became extinct, the Soviet flag was then removed from the Kremlin. It was the world's first and largest communist state. The flag today is replaced witht the Russion Tricolour and the 15 countries are now independent States. -
The Fall of the Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was built to separate the Soviet run West berlin from East Berlin and the rest of Germany. The wall was built on August 13, 1961 and it was officially taken down by Hungary in late August of 1989.
