Spanish Flu
Spanish flu was first found in 1918 and was one of the worst global Pandemics in History. The mortality rate was between 50 to 100 million worldwide. If you age ranged between 20-40 you were most likely to come down with the sickness. Canada was welcomed with the disease when troops came home from war. Canada economy stuggled during this time as many people stayed in their homes. This led to buisnesses being temporarily closed. -
Prohibition / Smuggling
Prohibition was implemented in Canada during the war to better increase productivity and to better support our Canadian soliders. Many Canadians were not happy about this decision and decided to smuggle Alcohol through Quebec ( which was the only province not banned fro drinking alcohol) into the USA. This began a very risky business as it boosted organized crime in Canada and led to many people getting sick or even dying from trying to make the alcohol at home. -
Soldiers Returning Home (Challenges)
When Men returned home in 1919, they didn't come back to what they anticipated. Employment rates were low because of Women working and there was not need to be making wartime aritilery in factories anymore. Wartime inflation was at a rise, which made it harder for families to stay afloat. Men had to remeet their families again and still deal with post war trauma. -
Winnipeg General Strike
Winnipeg General Strike happened in the 1919 and included 30,000 strikers who went on strike to fight for the right to decent wages and safe working conditions. This strike lasted 6 weeks and their goal was to win over the government and finally have acomfortable work. -
Bloody Saturday
Bloody Saturday officially marked the end of the Winnipeg General Strike. It started as a peaceful day of marching for the strikers and then the RCMP showed up on horses along with hired Union and a riot broke out with the strikers. Shots rang out and many people got injured and 2 people died at the scene. Countless Strikers were arrested along with Helen Armstrong ( a Women's Right's Activist). After that day the Winnipeg Mayor was fired from office. -
Residential Schools
Residential Schools were put in place in the late 1800 for Aboriginal children so that they could better fit in with the Canadian society. They were ran by the Canadian government. Aboriginal Children were stripped of there culture and beliefs and forced to fit in with Canadian standards. They were emotionally and sexually abused and once they returned home they were disconnected from their family and they lost their sense of personal identity. They had to change there clothes and their culture. -
Flappers
Flappers who groups of young Western women who broke out of the gendered social role after the first World War. They wore short dresses, went to night clubs, smoked and danced. They inspired women and it showed how Women evolved over into the 1930's -
Invention Of Insulin
Before the invention of Insulin, people whp were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes had a short Period to live. So when insulin was disovered, it changes the lives of so many around the world. After returning from the war, Dr. Fredrick Banting met up with Charles Best and J.J.R Macleod. They studied Pancreatic extracts at the University Of Toronto and were able to discover insulin and it way to combat low blood sugar. Because of their discovery they were able to save so many lives around the world. -
Chinese Exclusion Act
The Chinese Exclusion Act was put in place to stop Chinese immigration into Canada. Canadian citizins were worried the chinese would take their jobs, and discriminated against them. However if you were a student, Merchants or dipolomat you were aloud to stay. This then led to families being split up and other family members being sent back to China by boat. It really shows how much racism and discrimination Canada had during this time and it makes me sad to hear them being treated this way. -
Person's Case
The Person's case was a group of 5 women ( Nellie McClung, Henrietta Edwards, Irene Parlby, and Louise McKinney). These women's rights activist fought for Women to be declared equal and qualified as person's instead of subjects under the law. The British Council confided and agreed with the Womens Statements. Because of these incredible Women, they were able to set up a foundation for our next generation. -
Black Tuesday
Black Tuesday represents the day when the stock market crashed in th USA. This was a sign to Canadians that the economy was not doing well in North America. Because of our close ties with the USA we weren't short to fall. On Nov 1 our stock market crashed and almost all of Canada was somewhat affected. Because of our credit use almost everyone owed the bank money. Almost all the businesses closed and the banks ran out of money. This made it impossible for stuggling families to find jobs. -
The Great Depression
The Great Depression was one of the worst events in Canada's History. Over 30% of the population was unemployed and families were drowning in debt with barely enough money to support their families. Bussiness slowed down and things became very cheap. Family were forced to sign up for relief or go on the dole just to get by. Little did Canadians Know this stock Market crash would last another 10 years until the start of ww2. -
Bennet Buggies (1930/1935)
R.B Bennet was Canada's Prime Minister during the start of the Great Depression. Bennet was a rich man who seemed to believe that if we just waited the Depression out the economy would just figure itself out on its own. Many people were upset because at a time of hardship Bennet failed to do anything productive. He finally had a plan to increase would trade and increase tariffs, but that plan didn't work because no country would want to trade with us if we has a tax on our products.
