Britain Declares War on Germany #1
On August 4, 1914, Britain was the first to declare war on Germany; however, Britain avoided this decision as much as possible; unfortunately, it "had to happen." According to historians today, many factors contributed to WW1. Given that Canada was a part of the British Empire at the time, Canada would be immediately involved if they went to war. Because Britain was so reliant on India and its resources, securing trade routes between the two countries was a top priority, rather than the war.

By 1907, it was clear that Germany was Britain's greatest threat with its strong economy, enormous population, and powerful armed forces. Britain's most significant threat; Europe feared Germany would defeat them. Britain joined the Triple Entente alongside France and Russia. Britain did not fight even when German troops invaded Belgium as part of the Schlieffen Plan.

Germany hoped that Britain would stay out of the war entirely. Under the Treaty of London of 1839, Britain promised to protect Belgium. Britain refused to ignore it when Germany attacked France through Belgium and declared war on Germany within hours. The central powers went to war with the allies. Approximately 61,000 Canadians died, and 172,000 were injured in WW1. The participation of Canadians in aerial combat was significant. More than 23000 Canadian airmen served with the British forces.

Other European countries had many enemies; for instance, Belgium and France had large African empires. Germany had colonies in Africa and was interested in North Africa in the 1900s. Britain was more concerned about Russia and France than Germany because the two countries had a good relationship before Kaiser Wilhelm II took control of Germany. France, Russia, and Germany began to build up their military forces. Throughout the 1900s, all great powers began to build their armies and navies.
