Wilfrid Laurier
Laurier and his liberal party swept to power just at the turn of the century they continued to rule for another 15 years. Reffered as the "Golden Ages" of laurier. Clifford Sifton the minister of the interior in Lauriers new government which was trying to find ways to fill the west with settlers. The government ran advertising campaigns in Britian, Europe and the United States describing the opportunuties available in Western Canada. -

Assassanation of Archduke Franz
On Sunday June 28 1914 in Sarajevo Austria Hungry, was the murder of Sarajevo. Archduke and the Archduchness ,were coming to town. He was the soon to be ruler , the emperor. At around 10am the Royal couple drove ina 4-car motocade and someone threw a bomb at them but it hit the hood and exploded. Gavrilo Princip part of the Serbian terrorist group stepped up to the car and fired 2 shots one hit Archduke on the throat and one into Sophias stomach. They both died on the way to the hostipal. -
Battle of Ypres
The Germans attacked a canadian force that was new and inexperienced in the ways of war. This battle marked the first time that either side in the war used pioson gas in a battle. This gas caused choking, caughing, burned eyes, and destroyed your lungs. The only way you could protect yourself from the gas was to cover your mouth with cloths soaked in pee. The line was held due to the Canadians courgage and strength. This marked one of the first Canadian victories in the war. -
Vimy Ridge
The battle of Vimy Ridge was fought from April 9-14 during world war 1. After the carefull training and rehearsal the canadians supported by 1000 troops attacked along a 6.4km front. By April 14 they had gained more ground, more guns, and more prisoners that any previous British offensive had done. The big win was a sense of achivement and a national pride created by this success gave the canadians a great feeling of self confidence. The Canadian corps was to gian recogniton as an elite corps. -
Battle of Passchendaele
The battle of passchendaele took place in the fall of 1917. This war had to be ther worst one. It was faught in a sea of mud where footing was terrible and cover was unavaiable. Soldiers were just frustrated of trying to advance through the mud, duck boards were placed as pathwyas over the mud. Soldiers and horses who slipped into the mud were sucked in and drowned. Tanks could not move at all either. Almost 16000 canadians lives were lost , they gained 7km of mud that the Germans soon won back. -
The Leauge of Nations
The League of Nations was an international organizayion created just after World War one.The League attempted to maintain peace and encourgae co-operation between natians by using arbitration to settle disputes. 63 natians eventually joined. When italy invaded Ethiopia , the Canadian representative at the leauge urges strong action against the agressor but the govenment of prime Minisater Mackenzie King overruled its delegate. -
Prohibition
Proibiton was the the ban of manufacturing and selling of alcohol. The act lasted from 1920 - 1933 it was now illegal in Canada and in the U.S.A. Popele wanted to ban alcohol because people believed that instead of making beer the grain should be used to help soliders in Europe. Another was the Ant-saloon leauge in the United States and the Womens Christian Templance Uniuon in Canada were the 2 groups who wanted prohibition. Famous Al Capone made millions selling his illegal alcohol. -
Riding The Rods
Riding the rods was one of the worst things thats happened during the great depression. Millions of people would jump into box cars and travel from town to town just trying to make a few bucks or get a meal of two. One box would be full of people up to 130 people. People would ride for years but could not get a full time job anywhere. Riding the rods just wasnt a cake walk, you needed to know your stuff from the whistles, lights, and the flags on the engine it was a very dangerous travel. -
Devastation In The West
Praire farmers were among the Canadians that were hit the hardest during the Depression. Rapidly rising wheat products had brought many settlers to the west to grow but it turned out to be a very bad idea. The drought came and nothing would be abe to grow and the the drougth had caused the land to dry out so much that it had been worked and ploughed so much it was really fine. Then came the grasshoppers they ate everything from broom sticks to leather seats of a John Deer tractor. -
Holocaust
The halocasut was the attempt, planned extermination of the German jews by the nazis during WW2. The holocaust was very nasty and brutal. The jews were sent to concentration camps separated from their family and friends. They killed the jews by burning them, gassing them and over working/starving. By 1945 the Germans killed nearly 2 out of every 3 jews as a party of the Final Solution, about 5.7-6.4 millions jews were killed. -
Pearl Harbour
Pearl Harbour was an American military base in the Hawaiian islands. The Amercians had moved in alot of ships to show force to discourage the Japanese ideas of explansion into the pacific. Yamamoto knew that they couldnt survive a long war so they did one punishing attack. The Japanese flew low to the ground they had advanced planes and torpedoes and the stormy weather shielded there approach. They lit up everything in sight with tons of bombing and torpedoing the bottom of the ships. -
Atomic Bomb (Hiroshima and Nagasaki)
The first ever atomic bomb was run by J. Robert Oppenheimer in Los Alamos , New Mexico. The "Manhattan project" was a 2 billion dollar gamble but on July 17, 1945 they successfully tested it. The first bomb was dropped on the city Hiroshima at 8:15 on August 6 1945, it contained 20,000 tonnes of TNT it killed from 80000-100000 people Three days later the second bomb code named 'Fat Man' was dropped over he city of Nagasaki killing over 100,000 people. -
Normandy Invasion
The third Canadian infrantory division and the second canadian armoured brigade were apart of the allied focses which attacked the Normandy coast of France in operation Overload. Landing in Juno beach between Vaux and St.Aubin-sur-Mer , the Canadians penetrated about 9km inland. The Canadian army launched several massive armoured and infrantory attacks toward Falaise. After a series battles, Falaise was siezed on August 16. The Canadian forces suffered 18444 causalties during the fighting. -
Baby Boom
The baby boom occured between 1946--1961 during this time Canadas population inccreased from 12-25 million more than 50%. Many people put off having kids because of the depression and wars. A population increase ment greater consumer need and helped the ecomnomy. People built new homes after the wars were over and the incertaintly and material shortages ended. This is when suburbs sprung up outside of sity centres. -
Canadian Bill Of Rights
Canadas first code of human rights came in 1960 when the governmant of John Diefenbaker passed the Canadian bill of rights. It provided a wide range of legal, individiual and political rights. It recognizes the rights of individuals to life, liberty, personal security and enjoyment of property. It protected freedoms of religion,speech,assembly and association. In addition Alberta, Quebec and Saskatchewan introduced their own bill of rights. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a very important part of the cold war. The Soviets had missles pointed at the Americans set up in Cuba. Kennedy put up a wall of ships and if the Soviets would have crossed it , that would have meant war. This wouldnt have been good because both the Americans and Soviets had nuclear weapons. The situation was later defused by the Soviets first taking away there missles from Cuba and Americans from Turkey.
It would have been a chaotic bomb war. -
Pierre Elliot Trudeau (PM)
Pierre Eliot Trudeau was elected in 1968 as Prime Minister. From his base in Montreal, Trudeau took control of the Liberal Party and became a charismatic leader. During the October Crisis after James Cross and Pierre Laporte were kidnpped, Trudeau responded by invoking the War Measures act which gave the government extreme powers of arrest and detention without trial or reasoning.Five of the FLQ terrorists were flown to Cuba in 1970 as part of a deal in exchange for James Cross life. -
Summit Series
The Summit Series was when Canada played the Soviets in 8 game serie.This time Canada was able to use (borrow) the best NHL players and finally make it even. This was more than just hockey games. The first game the Canadians got killed 7-3 but won the second game to tie it up. The third game was a tie 4-4. Fourth Canada losing 5-3 and getting booed infront of a home crowd. Fifth Canada was up 4-1 but lost 5-4. Canada won both games 6 and 7. Then came game 8 where Henderson scored with 34s to go! -
Terry Fox
Terry Fox was born on July 28 1958. But when Terry was on his way home he got into a car crash when he rammed the back of a pickup truck. Later he had to get the leg amputated. But 3 weeks later he was walking on his artificial leg. While in the Hospital he read a story about Dick Traum about how he was the first amputee to complete the New York City Marathon,he was inspired and decided to do a marathon himself going across Canada to support Cancer fighters.He ended in Thunder Bay running 5373km -
Quebec Referendum
The 1995 Quebec referendum was the second referendum to ask voters in the Canadian province of Quebec whether Quebec should leave from Canada and become an independent state. The 1995 referendum was different from the first referendum on Quebec's sovereignty in that the 1980 question proposed to negotiate sovereignty-association. The referendum took place in Quebec in October 1995 and was to decide whether Quebec should leave Canada but was defeated in a very narrow margin 49.5%YES and 50.5% NO.
