    NATO's purpose is to protect the freedom of its members.NATO was established after World War II as part of the United Nations. Its primary purpose was to defend member nations against the large number of troops in pro-communist countries, during the cold war. Canada played a large part in this army and also helpedto intervene between nuclear warfare.

    The Warsaw Pact is the name commonly given to the treaty between Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union. Like NATO but for Europe.

    In 1956, a Canadian named Lester B. Pearson led Canada into middle power respectability when he diffused an upcoming war between the US and the Middle East.In the summer of 1956, Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser seized control of the Suez Canal, a critical shipping route, which was run by French and British. This led to a hostile standoff, that barely avoided a war if the UN and LEster Pearson had not stepped in and called for a sieze fire.

    Officially at the start of the Vietnam War Canada was stated as completely neutral. however it strongly sided with America and troops were sent out to help Americans during this war.

    By 1961, Cold War tensions in Berlin were running high. For East Germans dissatisfied with life under the communist system, West Berlin was a gateway to the democratic West. Between 1949 and 1961, some 2.5 million East Germans fled from East to West Germany, most via West Berlin. By August 1961, an average of 2,000 East Germans were crossing into the West every day. The Berlin Wall sealed them Easterners from escaping communist.

    When the USSR and Cuba were working together to create nuclear weapons, the main targets were Canada and the United States. The US went immediately offensive, while Canada was very hesitant considering their close proximity to Russia. Thankfully, the Crisis ended and Canada did not have to make up its mind.
