Creation of the United Nations
After the Second World War countries were seeking for a new organization that could provide peace, equality and prevent new wars.In June 1945, 50 countries including Canada met in San Francisco to create the UN.
Canada played the role of drafting the UN charter, and solve some of the problems of the UN. -
World War II Ends
The Axis powers surrended. Germany surrended on May 7th 1945 (V-E) the same year Hitler commited suicide. Japan hold out for a few months fighting against USA, however at the end after the atomic bombs dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki by USA it surrended
(V-J).
Canada contributed in both allied victories with its army, navy, and airforce. Moreover, Canada trained other pilots and spies and produced munitions. -
Creation of NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organizatio (NATO) was formed to provide mutual defence between its members.
Canada is a leading member of NATO. -
Communist take control of China
Communists led by Mao Zedong proclaimed China as a communist republic. USA refused to recognize the communist government creating tension between them. Other countries as Canada recognized the communist government as the official government of China. -

The Korean War
After the Japanese surrender in 1945, Korea was divided. North Korea became communist, and South Korea became democratic.
In 1950 North Korean troops invaded South Korea, a UN force led by Americans, was sent to fight in Korea to the defence of South Korea.
Canadians served in it showing their support to the UN. In total 1000 Canadians were wounded, and 400 killed. -

Vietnam War
The war was between Vietnam divided into communist (North) supported by other communist countries, and anti-communist (South) supported by anti-communist countries like USA which feared of the "Domino effect" and was trying to contain communism in Asia.
Canada received people who was fleeing from the war. -
Creation of WARSAW Pact
It was a communist alliance between different states, developed in response to NATO to promote mutual defence.
Canada as part of the NATO pact was against the WARSAW pact. -
Lester Pearson diffuses the Suez Crisis.
Canada was involved in this event with the Canadian Foreign Minister Lester Pearson as a major player at the UN, he proposed a United Nations Emergency Force to keep peace. His plan resulted and UN forces entered into Egypt to reduce tensions between Egypcians and the invasor forces (Soviets)
Later Pearson was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize. -

Prime minister Jean Lesagne wanted to modernize Quebec and encourage growht with the use of different strategies as technology. -
Berlin Wall is built
German city of Berlin was divided into four zones, East German citizens were allowed to travel to West Berlin, however after closing the border between West and East Germany it became difficult.
The Berlin wall was built to prevent East Germans to "escape" to the West. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The United States spotted Soviet missiles in Cuba, as Cuba is close to USA it was a major danger. USA set up a naval blockade This event was a dangerous because it could lead to a Nuclear War.Prime minister of Canada Diefenbaker, supported USA but not completely, he refused to put Canadian troops on alert. However, later he agreed to support USA if an attack occurred. -

It started by the kidnapped of British James Cross, the War Measures Act was imposed arresting anyone related to the FLQ. -

Soviets invaded Afghanistan to ensure a pro-Soviet regime in the power of the country. This invasion was opposed by Afghanistan with "guerrillas" armed by USA. -

Trudeau managed to get all provinces except Quebec to patriate the Constitution adn Charter of Rights and Freedoms -
Berlin Wall is torn down
It took about three decades to be torn down from its building. In 1989 the first free labour union was form and with it the end of the communism. As a symbol of freedom the Berlin Wall was torn down. -
Charlttown Agreement
Brian Mulroney (new prime minister) established a serie od constitutional changes known as Charlottown Agreement -
Clarity Act
Jean Cheten (prime minister) passed the Clarity Act which forces Quebec in future to ask a clear question on future referenda.
