    Quebec's Padlock Law
    The Union Nationale made the Padlock Law, officialy knowns as "Act to protect the Province against Communistic Propaganda". Which was and act that prohibited the use of communisitc progoganda.
  • Gouzenko Affair

    Gouzenko Affair
    A Soviet Embassy worker Igor Gouzenko learned that there were Soviet spies operating in Canada. He proposed to the Government in return for his families saftey he would then give them secret documents exposing the Soviet spies.
  • Berlin Blockade

    Berlin Blockade
    A blockade was made in Berlin after the Soviets broke an agreement with former allies. Although they were able to get food and supplies over the wall with a plane it still caused tension between the Soviets and their former allies.
  • North Atlantic Treaty Organization

    North Atlantic Treaty Organization
    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was a group of countries, including Canada, who banded together to fight against any furthar Soviet agression.
  • The Forgotten War

    The Forgotten War
    North Korea supported Communsit China and decided to attack South Korea. The United Nations condemed the attack and called on all UN members to assist South Korea. Only sixteen countries aided, Canada ranked third in total aid.
  • The Suez Crisis

    The Suez Crisis
    An Egyptain leader tried to take control of the Suiz Canal but Britain, France and Isral didn't want this to happen and pushed Egytian forces out. Russia then threatned to come to the aid of Egypt. A solution was then later found by Canadian prime minister Lester. B. Pearson who won a Nobel Peace Prize for his work.

    Sputnik
    Soviets launched Sputnik into orbit in 1957, the Americans then responded by saying that they were going to be the first to send a man into space. Althought the Soviets were the first to send a man to space the Americans were able to be the first to send a man to the moon.

    The Diefenbaker Conservatives were voted into office in 1957 and this resuleted in the Avro Arrow being cancelled. The cancellation of the Avro Arrow, an inceptor aircraft built by Canadians, cost Canadians millions of dollars
  • NORAD and DEW

    NORAD and DEW
    Originally known as the North American Air Defence Agreement and later renamed North American Aerospace Command, NORAD was created to alert North America of attacks coming from the Soviet Union. DEW, the Distant Early Warning line, stretched from Alaska to Greenland, set up by American and Canadian governments.

    Bomarc Missile Crisis
    Under Canada's agreemnet witht the United States they deplopyed two squadrons of the American ramjet powered antiaircraft missiles. Controversy arose all around on wheather or not Canada should adopt nuclear war heads. In the end the Government could not bring the nuclear war heads into Canada leading to poor Canadian-American realtions during this time period.

    Cuba was ready to defend themselves and were armed with nuclear weapons. Canadian Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker, refused to put Canadian troops on alert. Due to American President, John F. Kennedys requests, Diefenbaker put the troops on alert, but only after the climax of the crises.

    Draft Dodgers In Canada
    During the Vietnam War when the American's had lost hope and were no longer enlisting in the war the government had to bring into effect conscription. Many men did not like this and fled to Canada. These men were called Draft Dodgers. Canadian immirgration shows that 20 000-30 000 eligible American men moved to Canada during the Vietman War.

    NHL players and top players from Soviet Russia played a series in which Canada won the series with one single goal by Paul Henderson. This monumental sporting moment gave Canadians an unparalleled sense of nationalism.

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    The weekend that the Berlin wall finally came down was seen by news reporters as "the greatest street party in the history of the world". Over two million people from East Germany went over to celeabrate in West Germany. One man was seen writing "only today, is the war really over" as Germany reunited together for the first time since 1945.

    In December of 1991 the world watched in awe as the Soviet Union fell into fifteen different countries. A victory by the West who fought for freedom and democracy. The United States rejoiced as its enemy was brought to their knees, as the cold war was offically over. The Fall of the Soviet Union was to transform the political and economical situation all around the globe.
