Start of the Cold War in Canada
Igor Gouzenko, a young clerk, offered evidence to the Canadian government in exchange for asylum to prove that two soviet spy rings were in effect in Canada. Often called Gouzenko Affair. This marked the beginning of the Cold War in Canada -
Creation of the United Nations
Canada was considered a medium power, so during the creation we helped passed the drafting of the Un charter, and we are in the General Assembly and Security Council. -
Newfoundland joins Canada
Showed that Britain had little concern for its colonies; Canadian confederation won over the thought of self government. -
Canada joins NATO
Treaty of which members joined form defense against Soviet attack. -
Korean War begins
Communist North, with help from the Soviets, attack Democratic South, who had US support. Clash of Communism against Democracy. Helped show that the UN, in particular Canada, support its ideals. -
Immigration Act of 1952
Canadian citizenship could be given to people who were born outside of Canada, who were living full-time in Canada

Suez Crisis
Egyptian President seized Suez Canal from Britain and France, which was a vital trading route. Lester Pearson, Canadian Prime Minister at the time, suggested creating the United Nations Emergency Force. This replaced combatants with peacekeeping forces. -

Canada joins NORAD
Warning system for America and Canada for protection against nuclear strike. -
Avro Arrow project ceased
Canada, deciding the project was too expensive, decided to instead buy the Bormac Missile form America. This could've been Canadas major mark in aviation history. -
Quiet Revolution
Was a cause for Quebecs provincial pride; led to people having separatist beliefs. It was that Quebec felt like their own country and wanted the privileges and laws to to become sovereign to Canada. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Cuba and Soviets declared that if the US intercepted or hindered Soviet-Cuban affairs, World War would break out. Ended with America promising not to invade Cuba, and Russia removing their missiles stationed in Cuba. -

Brought in health care, student loans, Canada Pension Plan, Order of Canada, and the current flag.
Declined Canadian involvement in Vietnam. Supported arming Canada with nuclear weapons. -

First introduction of universal health care in Canada -

Implementd income tax cuts and improved benefits for the poor and elderly. -
White Paper
This was an act that would try to abolish the "Indian Acts", which was thought to eliminate Indian as a legal statues to help ensue equality. -
October 1970 crisis
French speraratist terrorist attacks by the FLQ. Involved the kidnappings of James Cross and Pierre Laporte, and his subsequent murder. This was the first time the War Measures Act was issued without a threat of war. -
Vietnam War ends
Communist North seized control. -
Immigration Act of 1978
It focused more on who is allowed in to Canada, not who should be kept out. It also gave provinces more power on their own regulating power. -
USSR invades Afghanistan
Soviet response to a peoples revolution to overthrowing a socialist governement. In theory, this war armed Afghanisatn with the weapons it has today. -
Jean Suave
Became the Speaker of the House of Commons. In 1984 was appointed as Governor General. -
Constitution Act
Introduced new changes to the British North America act, and brought upon the Canadian Chartar of Rights and Freedoms. -
Brian Mulroney becomes P.M.
Sought to create a balanced budget by cutting government spending. Also made efforts to amend constitution. -
Meech Lake Accord
This was attempt to persuade the Quebec government in remaining with Canada. When rejected, it caused the feeling if need for Quebec sovereignty to rise. -
Canadian Multiculturalism Act
Fixed many social issues in Canada. For example, the right of equality between men and women. -
Oka standoff
Was a standoff between the Mohawk First Nations and the federal government. Lead to the diputed land being bought by the government and handed over to the Kanesatake First Nations -

Showed commitment to UN because Canada attacked through UN order. -
End of the Cold War
Soviet Union ceased to exist, Russian Republic was formed. Cold War officially came to an end -
Charlottetown Accord
This was an attempt to change the constitution of Canada, including adding Quebc to the constitution, aboriginal self government, and health care. It was universally disproved and wasn't passed. -
Canada joins NAFTA
Free trade between North American countries. -
Kyoto Accord
One of the first attempts to lower global Green House Gases. -
Territory of Nunavut
Canads most recently formed territory. It is a sign of Aboriginal and Federal governement compromise. -
Nisga Treaty
Most modern land treaty between federal government and First Nations.
