Kristallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass)
Kristallnacht was a terrible night for Daniel when he was eleven. His whole family except for his dad was at home hiding with the lights off so that no Germans knew that they were there. They heard glass breaking and screams all night. Their father didn't return home till later the next day, so everyone thought he was dead. When he returned he said that he had been at the police station and it was time to leave Germany. -
Rosa
Daniel was fifteen when he met Rosa. She had blue eyes and red hair. When Daniel met her he was in his underwear pocking lice out of his clothes. Naturally he was embarrassed and ashamed, but Rosa acted like it was completely normal and ignored it. The other thing she did on that day was invite Daniel and his sister Erika to a youth group. -
The first meeting
Daniel and Erika went to the first meeting that Rosa invited them to. When they got there Rosa gave Daniel a book and said he could read it if he brought it back. When the meeting started everyone started talking a about how to rebel against the Germans. Some even suggested stealing guns from factories and then using them against the Germans. Then Erika stood up and said no to that and then suggested that we just wait for the Russians and hope that God would protect them. -
Daniel's 16th birthday
On Daniels birthday everyone told him happy birthday and some even sang to him. There was also a meeting on Daniel's 16th birthday. At the meeting Rosa brought up how one of the workers found a note on one of the transports that said everyone on the transport was going to their death. So the whole night the group talked about ways that they would hide people from the transports. -
The factory
The factory incident happened when Rosa and Erika's factory started to give the workers terrible foods. So everyone at the factory went on strike until the factory gave them better food. -
Train to Auschwitz
One day Daniel and his family got a note that said they were being taken by the transports. The next day they got in a train and were sent to another work camp called Auschwitz. This was the worst place Daniel had ever been. People were being gassed and then burned by the thousands. When Daniel got there he had to change into work cloths and then pour disinfectant all over your cuts. Then Daniel was sent to a barracks that smelled and looked terrible. -
Steets of Lodz
Daniel is now seventeen and is on a train to a place called Lodz. When he got there he couldn't believe what he was seeing. Jews were just dying of starvation on the streets. When people died they would just lay on the streets for days until the Germans came and picked them all up. -
Train to Buchenwald
This event happens to Daniel about a year after Auschwitz. When Daniel got on the train he thought that after what had happened in Auschwitz that he for sure was going to be killed, but when the train got to the camp all of the prisoners were taken into a building and got a real shower and got really nice cloths. Daniel knew that this was the start to a better life. -
The battle
This day was very important to all the Jews that lived in Buchenwald. The Jewish rebellion (which included Daniel) all carried weapons that they stole from the Nazi's about a week before. Now the U.S. was closing in on the Germans so the Germans decided to march out all of the Jews to a different camp, but Daniel and the Rebellion fought against the Germans with their guns and took over the camp. This was a big victory for everyone that was imprisoned at Buchenwald. -
Reunited
This is a sad, but also very exiting day for Daniel. He goes back to Lodz and finds Rosa. Then Daniel proposes to her and she says yes. Later though Daniel finds out that Erika is dead. Daniel also finds out that Fredrick had survived the whole thing and is now living with Rosa's family.
