    Missouri Compromise was an agreement made by Henry Clay and passed by the U.S congress. This compromise was that Maine was to be admitted as a free state, while Missouri would be admitted as a slave state. This was important because it kept the balanced between free and slave states.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    The Wilmot Proviso was a document created by David Wilmot, that stated that no slavery was allowed in the Mexican Cession. This bill was passed by the House of Representatives, but not the senate. The bill was important because it caused people to think of secession since they didn't want slavery.

    Compromise of 1850 was created by Henry Clay to stop the division between the north and the south, these resolutions stated that California would be a free state and that the Mexican Cession would be decided if it would have slavey by popular sovereignty.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    The fugitive slave act was a law that made it illegal to help runaway slaves and official that an official could arrest any slaves in the free states. The slaves were then taken to the commissioners were they decided wether the slaves were guilty or not.

    Stephen Douglas created the Kansas-Nebraska Act. This was that the faith of both Nebraska and Kansas wou.d be decided by the people. They would get to vote on wether or not they wanted slavery in those territories.

    Bleeding Kansas was when people in Kansas were making a choice on wether or not to vote for slavery. Southerners would come and vote for slavery then they would go back to their land. Both anti-slavery and pro-slavery poeple went into small violent fights. This was why it was called bleeding Kansas.
  • Dred Scott v. Sandford

    Dred Scott v. Sandford
    Dred Scott was a slave who's slaveholder died and was then given to his slaveholders wife. Scott sued for his freedom because he claimed to once live in a free territory. A small court ruled in his favor but the Supreme Court didn't, they claimed that Scott wasn't a citizen, therefore he couldn't sue. This showed us that slaves didn't have rights and then this cause more people to support the abolitionist.
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    Lincoln-Douglas Debates
    Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas wanted to become the leaders of the senate. Because of this they both fought in debates were they talked bad about each other and critiqued one another on the words that they said. This showed us that politicians will do anything to win at what they are aiming for.
