Navigation Acts
Cause: The colonists were trading with the Dutch and not the British.
Description: Restricted the colonies trading and the economic opportunities. The colonists were only allowed to pass their ships through England.
Response: This made the Colonists mad because they felt their money was being wasted and they began to smuggle goods. -
Sugar Act
Cause: It gave customs agents more power and latitude with respect to executing seizures and enforcing customs law.
Description: increased inforcements of smuggling laws and sugar/ molasses.
Response: The colonists boycotted luxury goods from England -
Stamp Act
Cause: The British needed money to support their Army.
Description: This act required the colonist to pay for an official stamp or seal whenever any paper goods were bought.
Response: This lead to many protests and violent riots. -
Quartering Act
Cause: The British soldiers needed provisions.
Description: The Quartering Act forced civilians to provide the British soldiers with food, water, shelter, and transportation.
Response: Protested -
Declaratory Act
Cause: The British wanted to show their power
Description: This act proclaimed that Parliament had the right to do whatever they wanted to the colonists.
Response: The colonists were enraged and protested. -
Townshend Acts
Cause: The Townshend Acts were specifically to pay for the salaries of officials such as governors and judges.
Description: The British taxed imported goods such as glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea.
Response: Lead to the Boston Tea Party and many protested -
Tea Act
Cause: The colonists were buying their tea from the Dutch and not the British.
Description: The British lowered the cost of their tea so the colonists would buy from them.
Response: The colonists continued to buy tea from the Dutch even if it cost more as a way of protesting. -
Coercive Act
Cause: The Boston Tea Party.
Description: The Port Act closed the Boston Port until all the tea was paid for. It also reduced the Mass. legislature and put some of the officials who helped the colonist on trial in England. Lastly, it expanded the Quartering Act.
Response: This act was passed to punish the colonists and was viewed as the "Intolerable Acts" for tem. -
Quebec Act
Cause: Intended to appease and gain the loyalty of French Canadians.
Description: The British Parliament to institute a permanent administration in Canada and gave them religious freedom.
Response: This made the colonists mad and lead to the American Revolution.
