    War was declared on Germany and Britian needed an army quickly. A recruitment campagn was set up by the Government and half a million joined the army in one month.

    The Defence of the Realm (DORA)
    DORA was introduced in 1914, it gave the government powers such as the right to take over land and industries which were important for the war effort.
  • Bombing

    The first bombing of British civilians! German warships shelled the East coast and in Scarbourough 119 people died.
  • Air raides.

    The first air raid struck England and German Zeppelin airships dropped bombs on the East Anglian towns.
  • Organisation.

    It came to Britian's attention that the war needed much more organisation on all aspects of British life, so the goverment and politions came together to try and fix the growing crisis in Britian.

    First air raid on London! Once again by the German Zeppelins which later became a big feature of the World War.
  • The Munitions crisis.

    The Munitions crisis.
    The Munitions crisis was when the British troops were facing a problem that they had a shortage of shells and bullets. The Governemnt set up a ministrry of Munitions under David Lloyd Goerge to reorganise Britian's munitions suply. A suffragete leader started a 'women's march for jobs' to recruit women to work in factories.

    The first Military service bill was introduced and conscription of all single men aged 18-40.
  • Battle of Somme

    Battle of Somme
    The horrific Battle of Somme began. More British soldiers were killed in this battle than in any battle before. The slaughter began as the 11 British divisions walked towards the German lines and the German machine guns started to fire.

    The Battle of Somme was called of and very little was told about the half a million British casualties which forcame the battle.
  • Llyod George Prime Minister.

    Llyod George Prime Minister.
    Llyod George replaced Herbet Asquith. Llyod straight away reorganised the British government to focas on all effort going into the war.He set up the ministary of labour to deal with the labour supply in the British industry. He also set up the ministry of food to deal with the food supplies.

    Germany began their third and most horrific campaign of unristricted submarine warfare against Brtish merchant ships. Because of this the women's land army was formed to recruit to as women as farm labourers.

    German U-boats sank one in four British merchant boats in the Atlantic. The food supplies were running short. Due to DORA the government took over 2.5 million acres of new famring land to help feed Britian.

    Parliment aggreed to let women over the age of 30 who were house owners the right to vote in general elections.
  • Compolary rationing scheme

    Compolsary rationing scheme was introduced in London and southern Britain with strict penalties for people who disobeyed the rule.

    Rationing of food became a massive problem in the 1918, rationing of meat, butter and cheese was the most common and spread throughout the whole country.
  • War over

    War over
    At the eleventh hour of the day of the eleventh month of 1918 the Armistice was signed and the war was officially over!
  • Women can vote!

    Women can vote!
    A general election was held and women over the age of 30 could now vote! And so on voted for the first time.
