Russo-Japanese War
Both Russia and Japan urned for control of Korea & Manchuria so they signed treaties that Russia broke. Japan attacked Port Arthur in February 1904. Civilians revolted due to Russian losses which brought ordinary people into the revolution. -
The Bolkshevik Revolution
Lenin and the Bolksheviks return to Prussia and stirred up conflict by taking over Soviet cities. The Bolksheviks gathered everyone's land and distributed it out among peasents. Their taking over of the Provisonal government angered the Soviets further only giving more fuel to light the fire of civil war. -
Rapid Industrialization
Workers were paid poorly, had awful working conditions and violated child labor laws. They were very unhappy and lacked political power causing them to strike. This sparked the involvement of the working class opposing their government. -
Bloody Sunday
Russian workers attempt to petition Czar Nicholas ll for better working conditions, freedoms, and a representative government. The czar's troops fire on petitioners and kill several hundred. This event demonstrated the socio economic problems suffered by average Russiansand the unwillingness of the monarchy to reform. -
World War l
Nicholas ll drug Russia into the war but they weren't prepared so Germans continuously plowed Russians down. This showed the weakness of Czar's rule and military leadership. Because of World War l supplies across the country dwindled and prices inflated angering civilians. -
The March Revolution
A city wide strike was held by women textile workers, it forced Czar Nicholas ll out of power. However it failed to create another strong form of government to take his place so a provisional government was installed, its weakness allowed Soviets to rise up to power. -
Civil War Rages in Russia
Bolksheviks were opposed by the White Army who were socialists and democrats united in efforts to defeat the Red Army. The Red Army had crushed their opponents but left Russia in chaos. There were mass casualties, hunger with a new famine, and a flu epidemic. -
Lenin Restores Order
The Russian civil war had destroyed the economy and left trade at a standstill, this forced many workers to flee to other countries. Lenin installed a small capitalist government called the NEP (new economic policy). This slowly allowed the country to recover, factories began to again flourish and peace was achieved. -
Politicol Reform
Nationalism was seen as a threat to Russia was divided into self-governing republics called the USSR. Later in history they were renamed the communist party and accumulated all of the power. -
Stalin Becomes the Dictator
Lenin had a stroke in 1922 and was unable to lead. Joseph Stalin saw an opportunity and slowly rose up the ranks in the Communist party, although Lenin belived he was dangerous. after Lenin's passing Stalin was in total command as the dictator leading Russia down an entirely new path.
