Compromise of 1850`
Henry Clay attempted to prevent a crisis between the north and the south by enacting the compromise. It created the fugitive slave act which made it easier to recover slaves that had escaped. Declared New Mexico and Utah determine whether they were slave free by popular sovereignty, -
Republican Party formed
The Republican party was against slavery and condemned it a moral evil. They formed from the Free Soil Party. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854
This act declared that each state has its own right to determine if it was a slave state by popular sovereignty. Proposed repealing the Missouri Compromise line. This lead to the event called Bleeding Kansas between pro slavery and antislavery settlers. -
Lincoln is Elected
Lincoln won the presidential election of 1860 as a candidate of the republican party becoming the 16th president and defeating Stephan Douglas, a democratic candidate. -
South Carolina Succeeds
After Lincoln's election South Carolina becomes the first state to succeed from the union. -
Battle of Bull Run
The 1st major battle of the Civil War was won by the Confedrates -
Battle of Fort Sumter
Confederate troops attacked a Union controlled fort and won the battle. This is the action that Lincoln declared war on them for. -
Jeffery Davis Elected
Jeffery Davis was elected president of the Confederacy after the South succeeded from the Union. -
Battle of Fredericksburg
The Confederates won this battle and showed the Union that they were going to be tough to beat. -
Emancipation Proclamation
After the bloody battle of Antientam President Lincoln issues his famous Emancipation Proclamation. This unofficially granted slaves freedom in the south. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
The Confederates won this battle but in turn they lost one of their great generals that went by the name Stonewall Jackson due to friendly fire. -
Battle of Gettysburg
After losing many battles the Union put all their eggs in the basket for this fight and came out on top, turning the tides of the war. Confederate General Lee was pushed back to Virginia after his defeat. -
Battle of Atlanta
Union troops capture and destroy Atlanta, which is a pretty major Confederate City. -
Richmond/ Appomattox Court House
Robert E. Lee surrenders to Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House in Richmond ending the Civil War. -
Lincoln's assassination
After Lincoln was reelected John Wilkes Booth assassinated him at Fords Theater. After he was killed his vice president, Andrew Johnson, took control of office. -
13th Admenment
Ratified after Lincolns assassination that abolished slavery officially.
