Pedro Alvares Cabral claims Brazil as his country
Portuguese arrive in Brazil under command of Pedro Alvares Cabral, who claimed this new land as his own. Pedro Alvares made an effort to make friends with the people living in Veracruz (now called Brazil.) This is significant because he brought the people on board his ships and traded goods with them. He claimed the land in the name of King Dom Manuel of Portugal -
Brazil gained independence from Portugal
Dom Pedro proclaims the independence of Brazil. It is significant because Brazil and Portugal fought a war and eventually Portugal gave up. -
Slavery is abolished in Brazil
The imperial family passed Lei Aurea “The Golden Law,” making Brazil the last nation in the Western Hemisphere to formally abolish slavery. It's significant to Brazil because the abolition of slavery ended what remained of the african slave trade. -
Christ the Redeemer Statue unveiled
The Statue had began being built in 1922-1931 in Rio de Janeiro. It is significant because it is a remembrance of 100 years of brazil independence from Portugal. -
Vargas is overthrown in a military coup and is elected president.
Vargas was overthrown in a wave of democratic sentiment sweeping postwar Brazil. Still he had wide popular support. Shortly after he is elected president in 1951. This is significant because he had a lot of support to be elected president and to keep his support he resorted to increasingly ultra nationalistic (or devotion to the interests of a nation) appeals.
September 18th, 1946- A new constitution is set up -
A new constitution is set up in Brazil.
The new constitution was the first to provide full political freedom. This is significant to Brazil because it restored all rights and freedoms expressed from the 1934 constitution. This constitution also reduced the powers of presidency, established full equality, improved federalism, elections for executive offices would be held in a single turn, and voters could choose candidates freely of whatever party. -
June 8th-29th, 1958 - Brazil is crowned world champions in football at the World Cup for the first time.
The fifa world cup was hosted by sweden June 8th- 29th. Brazil beat Sweden 5-2 in the final for the first title.This is significant to Brazil’s history because this date marks the only occasion the the World Cup was staged in europe and was not won by a european team. It is also significant because it marked the debut on the world stage of a the largely unknown 17-year-old Pelé. -

The Brazilian government was the authoritarian military dictatorship that ruled Brazil. This is significant because it helped improve Brazil’s economy during the military rule. -
Alcantara rocket exploded
21 people were killed in the explosion of a satellite rocket at Brazil’s Alcantara space center. It is significant to Brazil’s history because a successful launch of its VLS would have given Brazil the honor of being the first latin american nation able to send its own satellites into orbit. -
Brazil has a first female President elected
Dilma Vana Rousseff is elected Brazil’s first female president. This is significant because like the U.S. they had never had a woman president till then, which the U.S. still hasn't so it's a big step for women.
