Brain Development Conception to age 2

  • Period: to

    Conception

    Egg is fertilized
  • Neurogenesis

    Neurogenesis
A process in which neurons form in the brain. From conception to birth, the brain will develop all of the neurons that it will ever have.
  • Differentiation begins

3-4 weeks after conception, the brain will begin to develop synapses. (Bridges that connect neurons).
  • Migration

    Migration
About 9 weeks after conception. Neurons move outwards from the ventricles into the cortex and to their correct destination. The neurons travel by glial fibers. Two hemispheres emerge.
  • Dendrites Axons Growth

    Dendrites Axons Growth
Dendrites( Endings of the neuron. Receives signals.)
Axons (connect cells to each other. Send signals.)
  • Birth

    Timetoast Link
  • Sensory Pathways

    Sensory Pathways
Vision, hearing, and feeling is developed. Synapses form to connect:
visual cortex to the auditory cortex,
auditory cortex to the somatosensory cortex (for the haptic/touch information),
auditory cortex to the motor cortex (for the movement information),
visual cortex to the somatosensory cortex,
visual cortex to the motor cortex, and
somatosensory cortex to the motor cortex. https://thescienceofearlylearning.com/science/early-brain-development/
  • Language

    Language
Language develops. Speaking, listening, understanding. Begins to shape the brain to be functional in society (High Neuroplasticity.)
  • One year of age

  • Higher Cognitive functions

    Thinking, making decisions, problem-solving
  • Care

    Care
Babies' brains are considered sensitive. Babies need to be cared for in order to have success later in life. Fastest developing period for the brain.
  • Two Years of Age

    Two Years of Age
Pruning begins, Gradually eliminates extra synaptic connections through childhood and adolescence. Makes the brain more efficient. Brain is 75% of its final size. Lower neuroplasticity than year one.
