Morrill Land Grant
There are various threads in the origins of the modern community college which represent the convergence of disparate beginnings in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Since most present-day two-year schools are public, some educators would cite the establishment of land-grant colleges in 1862 by the Morrill Act as the ultimate progenitor of community colleges -
Phoenix College
Phoenix College, originally founded in 1920 with 53 students. It became the flagship college when, in 1962, voters elected to establish today's Maricopa County Community College District. -
MCCCD District
The MCCCD was formed in 1962 and is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. -
Extension colleges
By the end of 1963, Phoenix College had three extension sites:
The Camelback extension near the intersection with 16th Street. The building is no longer standing, but the location was near where Mel Clayton Ford exists today.
The Maryland extension located at 17th Avenue and Maryland (Jewish Community Center) and The Mesa extension was located at the intersection of Extension and Main -
Extension Colleges Become GCC..
In 1965, the new colleges were officially named Glendale Community College (Glendale CC combined Camelback and Maryland extension sites) -

Scottsdale Community College opened in the fall of 1969 and moved to its present location in the fall of 1970 -

SCC Business Institute Opens
The Business Institute [BI] an extension campus of Scottsdale Community College, which specializes in accelerated, accredited, and applied credit and non-credit learning for adults.
