  • Huey P. Newton

    Huey P. Newton was born on February 17, 1942.
    He died August 22, 1989. Before the BPP, Huey attended the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Merritt College. Because of the trouble he was facing in the streets, he began to take education seriously, finding inspiration when his older brother Melvin earned a Master's degree. Huey P. Newton was the main founder of the Black Panther Party. He is important because he was determined to gain civil rights for black people.
  • Founded on October 15, 1966.

    Huey met Bobby Seale at the University of San Francisco School of Law. They were involved in political groups at school before they started the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. They weren’t afraid to show their beliefs. They protested a gun bill with bringing armed weapons. They were known to be serious.
  • Ten Point Program

    October 15, 1966, Newton & Bobby Seale drafted the Ten-Point Program (or Ten-Point Party Platform). It established the direction and goals of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense.
  • J. Edgar Hoover leads FBI investigations into Black Panther activities.

    In 1967, the BBP began to gain more prominence. J. Edgar Hoover believed that the BBP were the greatest threat because the Black Panthers were “undermining” the black communities by having Free Breakfast and Education programs. The covert plan was called COINTELPRO. The effects of this were that the Black Panthers became the prime suspects of the program.
  • Huey Newton was charged with first degree murder felonious assault and kidnapping in oakland california.

    The event started when officer John Frey and Herbert Heanes tried to arrest Huey Newton for falsely identifying himself as the owner of a vehicle, but Newton thought the arrest was unjust and they got into a tussle where shots were fired, officer Frey was shot, officer heanes blacked out and Huey was shot in the stomach area .The effects were devastating Huey was charged with first-degree murder, felonious assault, and kidnapping.
  • Two Problems that they face today

    We want an immediate end to police brutality and murder of black people.
    Although The Black Panthers are no longer around, many people around the nation are still fighting for safety and equal treatment of black people like the NAACP and BLM movement.
  • Starts Free Breakfast for Children Program and Fights police brutality.

    The black panther leaders organized free breakfast to students to fuel revolution by encouraging black peoples survival and this was also done to have something that showed the black panthers weren’t what the news vilified them to be aside from the nonviolent protests to fight against police brutality. The effects were very apparent students weren’t falling asleep anymore and they weren’t having stomach cramps anymore. It started in 1969 in a church in oakland by feeding only a handful of kids.
  • Three biggest accomplishments

    The Black Panthers were very influential in media and entertainment. In media, they helped creative a positive and strong image for black people. Secondly, they made lots of progress both politically and economically in the north. Lastly, they provided confidence to black people and gave them a sense of hope and power. They fought police brutality and taught self defense for blacks in america. They preached sobriety in the black community by having rules that prohibited drinking & using drugs.
