    W. Bush and came to office in 1993. He relied heavily on his chief national security advisors. His foreign policy aproach was to use the End of the Cold War to spread the American ideal by promoting human rights, freedom and ending regional war and , without harming American's interests.

    UN and US intervention on Somalia

    The UN security Council created the United Nations Operation in Somalia I(UNOSOM I) to provide humanitarian relief and restore order after dissolution of the previous goverment. UN peacekeepers led by US were sent to Somalia. Could be seen as the execution of Clinton adminstration's approach.

    Clinton administration believed that the End of the Cold War and Yeltsin's presidency were the opportunities to turn Russia into a democratic capitalist country. However, Yeltsin faced both political opponents and economic problems within the country, the shock therapy made a disaster in the country. Even with the aid from US and IMF, it still turned into a near catastrophic economic crisis in 1998. Yeltsin was restless in Moscow, whereas Clinton in Wasinton also faced critic from his opponents
  • START II Treaty

    Between the United States and Russia on the Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms. It was signed by US Senior Bush and Yeltsin on 3 January 1993. However, the START II never entered into effect.

    Clinton administration decided to expand NATO with including countries in eastern Europe, former parts of the Soviet Union, this decision led to a tension between Russia and US relationship. NATO admited Poland,

    The Kosovo War was an armed conflict in Kosovo that lasted from 28 February 1998 until 11 June 1999. The War started de to the problem on autonomy of Kosovo. However, after three months, it was apparent that the bombing campaign by US and other NATO aircraft had failed to end the Serbethnic cleansing campaign in Kosovo.Nevertheless, the crisis in Kosovo severely tested the already precarious relationship between Russia and the West.

    Putin suceeds Yeltsin
    By the end of 1999, Yeltsin’s foreign and domestic problems, exacerbated by his deteriorating health. On 1999 12 31, he resigned from presidency. Even Putin had little experience in politics and economics. But in his brief tenure as prime minister, Putin had gained popularity by taking military action against the Chechens. Putin was pointed as acting president hours after Yeltsin resigned.
