    Mendez V. Westminster
    This federal court case challenged the practice of school segregation in Califorina. This case was brought about because parents claimed that the Orange County school district were segregating students into seperate schools based on their hispanic descent.
  • National Defense Education Act (NDEA)

    National Defense Education Act (NDEA)
    This act provided funding to education across the nation. THe purpose of this act was to provide English Language Learners (ELL) aid to help them advance in science, math and english language.

    After the revolution cuban immigrants floced to Miami in 1959. Soon after Dade County in Florida implemented a full bilingual program for Cuban students.

    This acts purpose was to provide school districts with federal funds to establish educational programs for students with limited English speaking ability. Equality of all language minority students was the goal, this act helped transform the way English Language Learners are taught.

    This act was passed because thousands of chinese speaking students were not receiving equal educational opportunities. The ruling of this case was that the school district needed to rectify the language deficiency and come up with an appropriate supplemental english instruction for the chinese students.

    National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) was create to provide english languge learners with academic success that will lead to English proficiency. NABE allso supports a multicultural society by promoting policy, programs and research to help guide students to a better education and learn respect for cultural and linguistic diversity.

    Serna V. Portales
    This case was brought abou because there was an absence of bilingual programs offered to hispanic students therefore these students were at an educational disadvantage in the public school system. The court ruled that the school distric must implement a bilingual curriculum to accomodate English Language Learners.
  • Castañeda vs. Pickard

    Castañeda vs. Pickard
    In this case, Mexican American parents claimed that their children were being discriminated against because of their ethnicity. The parents stated that the classrooms were segregated based on his or hers race. The court ruled to say that the districts must have a solid plan for Language English Proficiency (LEP) students and a system to evaluate their work to determine what to do next.

    This act was passed by the U.S. Congress to state that Native Americans have a right to express themselves through his or hers own culture. The main goal was to help provide a better education for students so that they are able to increase in success and performance in the classroom.

    Major Longitudinal Study
    In 1991 there was a major longitudinal study released by the U.S. Department of Education that found that the more schools developed childrens native language skills, the higher they score academically in the long run in english.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    This act requires that all English Language Learners are to recieve a quality education. ELL students should be exposed to grade level academic content as well as quality instruction for learning English.
