  • The Feminine Mystique

    The Feminine Mystique
    After doing research in the late 1950s, Betty Friedan published the groundbreaking book The Feminine Mystique in 1963. Friedan found that most women were unsatisfied with being housewives. The book brought attention to the issue which later kickstarted the second wave of feminism. This event influenced her advocacy for gender equality because it helped lead to the second wave of feminism.
  • National Organization for Women

    National Organization for Women
    Betty Friedan, Pauli Murray, and Aileen Hernandez came together and founded the National Organization for Women with Betty Friedan as its first president. NOW ended the practice of sex-segregated help-wanted advertising by demanding that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission enforce Title VII, which guaranteed equality in employment. The founding of this organization influenced her advocacy for gender equality by bringing awareness to gender discrimination in the workplace.

    National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws
    Betty Friedan helped found the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws. The goal of this organization was to establish the efforts of state abortion-rights under the first national pro-choice organization. In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion in all fifty states with limitations. This event influenced Friedan's advocacy for gender equality by bringing awareness to women's reproductive rights. During this time, women were limited in their choice to terminate pregnancy.

    Women's Strike for Equality
    On the 50th anniversary of women's suffrage, Betty Friedan organized the Women's Strike for Equality. Due to this movement, gender equality in workplaces and universities were implemented.
