    In August of 1861, Butler led a succesful amphibious assault on the Hatters Inlet in North Carolina, and moved onto New Orleans in May. After the city had already surrendered to Admiral David G. Farragut. In this time, Butler would proudly gain his enemies.

    Civil War TrustButler issued Order 28 during a certain time period, which stated that ANY ladt in New Orleans who showed contempt for Union Soldiers, would betreated as though they were a prostitute. This law drew great contreversy in both the North and South, caused Confederate president Jefferson Davis to label Butler and outlaw and earned Butler the nuckname of "Beast Butler". In December of 1862, Butler lost his position of Beast Butler.

    Butler was given command of the Department of Virginia and North Carolina in November of 1863.

    Troubles for Lincoln. Butler had the potential to cause political trouble for President. Lincoln ecspecially given his strong relations with Radical Republicans in Congress. Mr. Lincoln used former war secretary Simon Cameron to sound out Butlers political intentions in 1864.

    Butler went on to fail once again at Fort Fisher, North Carolina, and was ordered by Union general Ulysses S Grant to return home to await orders. On November 30th in 1865, Butler resigned commission.

    Butlwe was a Republican representative in Congress from 1867 to 1879, except in 1875 to 1877.
