Geneva Accords
Lasted from May to July in 1954. The U.S., Britain, USSR, China, and other nations met in Geneva, Switzerland. Decided to make Vietnam into two countries, with the border at about 17 degrees north. The North Vietnam was communist, South Vietnam was democratic. -
Diem is taken out of power
Diem had been persecuting Buddhists, and the U.S. wanted him out. On Nov. 1st, a coup took Diem out of power. He was shot to death later. -
Tonkin Gulf Resolution
On August 2, the USS Maddox was on the coast North Vietnam. A North Vietnam boat allegedly fired at the USS. The USS and another U.S. ship came back and fired at the enemies. On August 7, Congress approved the resolution. It gave Johnson a lot of potential in Vietnam. -
Thosands of soldiers in Vietnam
American soldiers began fighting the Vietcong. Thosands of soldiers were fighting in South Vietnam. -
Tet Offensive
January 30th is Tet, a Buddhist holiday. The Vietcong saw their chance and attacked communities in South Vietnam. The U.S. embassy was attacked. -
My Lai Massacre

Kent State Massacre
College students protesting the war set fire to a building. The National Guard came and shot and killed four people, and injured nine. -
Vietnam War Finally Ends
Nixon allowed soldiers from North Vietnam to stay in South Vietnam. All American soldiers left Vietnam.
