  • Sectionalism

    Sectionalism
    -different economic interest

    -The two sections also disagreed over slavery which was more common in the South and had almost disappeared from the North
    -New Western states joined, the North and the South disagreed over whether slavery should exist in those states.
    -made a number of compromises in which one side would be upset
    - Southerners felt that the federal government was taking powers away from the states, Was very upset about it.
  • The Missouri Compromise (1812)

    The Missouri Compromise (1812)
    The compromise drew a line across the Louisiana Purchase 36*30’N. Slavery would be protected in new states located south of the line but banned north of the line. Even though this was a compromise the south felt they didn't get what they really need, so did the North.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    -Supreme Court overrode Congress's decision to ban slavery north of the 36* 30 line.
    -The constitution was for support against Scott's request
    According to Supreme Court and the constitution Dred Scott isn't a resident.
    -Supreme court said a African American a slave or free could not be an American citizen
    -The south agreed on the decision from the Supreme Court but the north did not
  • John Brown's Rebellion

    John Brown's Rebellion
    -John Brown and his sons led attacks on pro-slavery residents and Harper's Ferry and the federal arsenal
    -started a slave rebellion in 1859
    -stole guns and other weapons so the slaves can fight back
    -Southerns said John Brown should be killed for his wrong doings. Southerns Called him a madman,devil,etc

    The Civil War ends on May 9th 1865 with the North winning the war and slavery being abolished.
