Before The Civil War

  • Compromise of 1820

    In order to keep a balance between the slave and free states the Missouri compromise was put into affect. This made Missouri enter as a slave state and Maine enter in as a free state.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Nat Turner' was a slave that started an uprising of slaves. This caused a rebellion of slaves that was led by Turner, and took place in Southampton County, Virginia. The slaves killed in between 55 to 65 people.
  • Compromise of 1850

    When California wanted to join the Union Henry Clay proposed a plan to keep the balance between the Union and Confrederacy. In order to keep this the Fugitive Slave Act was amended, and slave trade in Washington D.C. was abolished.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book written by an abolitionist named Harriet Beecher Stowe. The book was about the life of a slave and showed the Union how a slave was treated.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas occured when anti-slavery, free staters, and pro-slavery all lived near each other. The fight occured on Kansas soil giving it the name bleeding Kansas because 56 people died in the event. It lasted between 1854-1861
  • Abrahams Election

    Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860 by the people of the United States. When he was elected South Carolina seceded from the union, and six more states followed their departure in 1861.
  • Battle of Fort Sumter

    The shelling of Fort Sumter started when the confederates denied Abraham Lincolns resupply of Fort Sumter making the union ships turn around. Then they started bombarding the island for 34 hours ending with no casualties for the union. This was known as the first shot of the Civil War
