20,000 British soldiers are killed on the first of July, strating the battle of Somme. -

The day after
With small territorial gains but huge losses in their army size the British sit tight and hold their still well defended Somme front. -
German attack again at Verun
The Germans attack Verdun again this time using poisonous gas and advance towards fort Souville. Four days later the French stop the Germans advancing attack. -
Night attack
The British launch a night attack against the Germans along a 3,5 mile long section of the front, after advancing about 1000 yards the advan ce is stoped by the Germans. Two days later the British break through the German defences again but are pushed back. -

British tanks
The British use tanks for the first time at Flers-Courcelette on the Somme. The tanks were not very effective and most of them were lost to mechanical failure. -
The rains
During October there were was lots and lots of rain, turning the battlefield into a mud-pit. -
Battle of Somme ends
The battle ends on the 18th of November, the British only gained 8km of ground. The British had 420,000 casualties, the French had around 195,000 casualties and Germany had around 650,000 casualties.
