    The Norman Conquest of England began at the Battle of Hastings on October 14, 1066, between an English force led by Harold Godwinson and a Norman-French army led by William, the Duke of Normandy.

    King John sealed the Magna Carta on June 15, 1215, in a pasture near Runnymede. He agreed to their demands when confronted by 40 rebelling barons in order to prevent civil war. Innocent III, the pope, annulled the pact ten weeks later, and England descended into civil war.
