Introduction
warehouse location: This is to give the audience an idea of where the music video will be based. In this case, it is based in the city. (This urban theme is consistant throughout.) -
Period: to
bastille - pompeii
timeline of costume, location and props within the music video of bastilles pompeii -
Location
Location - Staircase: This shot compliments the introduction shot of the artist standing above the city. It's symbolic that at the beginning of the video he was a part of his own idealistic view of city life, and now he's on his way down to face the reality. (this is shown further down the timeline.) -
Props
Props - Bike: In this shot the artist is riding through an empty city, in which trash is all on the floor. this gives a feeling of emptiness, which again is present throughout the entire music video. -
Location
Location - Car Park: In this shot the musician is infront of the car, however when this shot is repeated it usually looks as though he is spotligted against a black background. This is used as a base track throughout the beginnng shots. This shot reinforces the theme of loneliness -
Location
Location - Cafe: This deserted cafe is used as the location where the artist [as the narrator/participant] goes to purchase a drink and witnesses the shopkeeper has transformed to look quite demonic. It should be noted that this is one of the brighter locations used in this music video. This location may have been used to contrast the previous dark setting in order to draw the audiences attention to this pivital moment in the video. -
Props
Props - Eyes: This is a motif in the video, which symbolises the reoccuring theme of lonliness. Her eyes are black and empty/lifeless. It adds a sinister feel to the video. -
Props
Props - Eyes: Again, this is the motif that is reoccuring through the video. -
Location
Location - Arcade: This location is used for two purposes. Firstly the arcade setting will appeal to younger audiences who are familiar with these locations. Also it's symbolic of urban life. It could also be symbolic of the fact that urban life has become more and more like a game. This interpretation coincides well with the lyrics "If you close your eyes, does it almost feel like nothings changed at all." (Referimg to the changing world around us.) -

Props - Car: We can see, that two modes of travel have been used in this video. The bike used at first appeals to enviromentally concious audience members and younger generations, and the car appeals to 17+ audience members and stereotypically "men". Therefore through the use of props, Bastille are catering for a wide range of sudience members. Two modes of travel could also symbolise that he has been on a long journey. -
Location
Location - Car Park: Again, we revisit the base track that is present during the chorus, however, we have included this second picture to show the much darker effect. -
Location
Location - Desert: This location is a type of desert terrain. Deserts are thought to be symbolic of abandoned land and lonliness, which again ties in with the central theme in the video. -
Props
Props - Eyes: This is the final image used at the end of the video. This is the motif that has been projected throughout the whole video, and now we finally see the connection of the motif with the artist, and it is the final image left in our minds before the end of the video.
