Abner Doubleday invented the game known as baseball in Cooperstown, New York, during the summer of 1839. Although the cncept had been around for a while, he was the first to give it a proper name.

Nolan Ryan becomes the first million dollar player
The Astro's hired Nolan as a free agent and signed a contract with him, making him the first player in MLB history worth one million dollars. -
MLB goes on strike
The strike caused the cancellation of nearly 1000 games and the entire post season, including the World Series. It was the first time a major American sport lost their entire postseason due to a work stoppage.
