Three Baby Ballerinas
George Balanchine and Leonide Massine were hired as choreographers. Serge Grigoriev was hired as the stage director. He had a amazing ability of remembering every detail of Diaghilev's work. The company was best known for the "Three Ballerinas", Irina Baronova, Tamara Toumanova, and Tatiana Riabouchinska. -
Rene Blum and Col.de Basil Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo
Rene Blum and Col. Vassili de Basil joined forces to continue Diaghilev's tradition and founded The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. -
The Lost Muse
Balanchine was fired because the audience preferred Massine's ballets and Diaghilev's style. -
New Management
Rene Blum and Col. de Basil Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo company was about to go bankrupt until American impresario Sol Hurok took over management and booked the company in St. James Theatre, which wasn't successful. He then booked the company at The Metropolitan opera House at 39th st and it was a success. -
Separation
Blum decides to separate from de Basil and give up his share of the partnership, leaving Massine and de Basil to run the company. Blum took the rights to the "Monte Carlo" name and hired Michael Fokine as his maitre d' ballet. -
Massine Joins Blum
De Basil's company, Col. de Basil's Ballets Russes hires Fokine away from Blum and as result Massine is livid. Massine joins Blum at the end of his contract with de Basil and many other of de Basil's dancers left to join Rene Blum's Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. -
First Season for Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo
With Sergei Denham as president, Rene Blum as co-director, and Massine as maitre d' ballet Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo opened it's first season in Monte Carlo. -
Iron Out Differences
Attempts were made by the management team of both companies to reconcile the differences and merge both companies, at the last minute de Basil backed out. -
The Original Ballet Russe
De Basil changed his company's name to The Original Ballet Russe and continued touring in the U.S., South America, and Australia. Hurok also left de Basil and joined Blum and Massine. -
World War II
World War II forced Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo to remain stateside in the US. -
Rene Blum's Death
Rene Blum decided to stay in Europe and died in a concentration camp.
