    The revival of Ballet Russe

    In1931,dance directors, Wasily de Basil and Rene Blum, renamed the company and its name has become Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo. They made Diaghilev's old cheographer, George Balanchine, Dance Master and priniclpe cheographer.

    New dancers came about

    Balanchine wanted to had the idea tomake young girls, about the ages 12-13 years old, and make them the stars of his performances for the new Ballet Russe. Tamara Toumanova, Tania Riabouchinska, Irina Boranova were the young dancers thatbeame the stars ofthe show. They were known as the "baby ballerinas".

    Massine era

    The cheographer's most successful Ballets were during what historians call the Massine Era of ballet. Which all started out in the London locaction of Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Where he introduced symohinc orchstrea, and stornger leading male roles.

    Ballet Russe in America

    As World War 2 was coming, Ballet Russe of Monte Carlo set off to America with Sol Hurok, who booked their first American Tour. This was the first time in 20 years Balet Russe went to America.
  • The Ballet War begins

    Blum and Basil did not see eye to eye and Blum resigned from the company. After Blum left, Basil’s ego was too much for Massine and he too soon left the company to start his own.
  • Massine vs. Basil

    A war erupted between Massine and Basil over the Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo comapny, including all the legal fights over the company name and choreography. Finally, Massine won the name, Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo, so Basil was forced to renamed his company The Original Ballet Russe.

    Debut of the new companies

    Each company was ready to make their debut. However, Massine unforenuately had lost rights to his choreography and found himself having to create 3 new enormous ballets.

    Ballet Russe in Austraila

    Basil and his company went Australia. For 7 months the filled the theaters. Australia loved ballet. The set the stage for new training facilities to be opened in this part of the world. By 1939 both companies were back in London
  • World War 2

    The second World War was declared. Panic struck and most Russians did not have the right papers to leave Monte Carlo. Both companies traveled on this boat, and they went to America.

    Massine's career ending

    Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo has a very different experience during the war-time years.They crossed over into hollywood and began dancing for the film industry. However, Massine loving the money and attention seemed to lose his touch and started producing bad productions.

    Sol Hurok decided to fine work for both companies and booked 9 months worth of touring by train to small towns that never experience ballet.

    1941 Hurok severed his ties with Basil, publically sataing that he is one of the most difficult people to bepartners with.. Basil and The Original Ballet Russe found themselves without work due to the fact that they lost the american tour previlge. since they were unable to return to London yet, Basil took his company on a Latin American tour
