Ballarat declared a town
During the year of 1852, surveyor, William H Urquhart, declared Ballarat a town, after a population explosion of aroung 20,000 digger. -
The Eureka Rebellion
The Eureka Rebellion occured due to the injustice srrved to the miners- licence costs, fines, etc. Roughly 36 miners and Government troopers were killed, and 114 miners were imprisoned. -
The Treason Trials
From February -March , all miners were acquitted by jurors of all charges relating to the Eureka Rebellion. Men who held miners rights were now qualified to vote. -
The Welcome Nugget
The Welcome Nugget, the second largest gold nugget in Australian history was discovered at Bakery Hill. The nugget weighed 69 kilograms and sold for $21,000. It was transferred to London, and melted down.

The Melbourne Railway
The railway construction cost 22,000 pounds to construct. It went from Ballarat to Melbourne via Geelong, and was built to service the booming goldfields. -
Ballarat declared a City
The Borough of Ballarat is declared a City, due to population increases. -

Ballarat closes the last mine. Ballarat now had more then enough industry to support the town. -

The Ballarat Historic Society originated to continually research and maintain the history of Ballarat, and undcovering new artefacts. -
Sovereign Hill
Soveriegn Hill opens, after the community of Ballarat recognised the need to preserve and celebrate the wonderful histroy of their city. -
The Ballarat Gold Mueseum Opens
The Ballarat Gold Mueseum opens. It contains over 100,000 items from Ballarat history, including items from the mining, military periods and costumes and photos. -
5.5 kg gold nugget found in Ballarat
A man who wishes to remain anonymous, discovered a 5.5 kg gold nugget, around 60cms underground, 162 years into the gold rush!
