World War I. As an outcome of WWI the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes is formed and quickly regains control of Kosovo. As a minority, the Albanians are promised extensive minority rights treaties. The Albanians claim the guarantees are never implemented and that the Serbs engage in widespread massacres and repression in the 1920s. The Serbs accuse the Albanians of fomenting discontent in Kosovo.

A Bosnian Serb student, Gavrilo Princip, assassinates the Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. This precipitates World War I. -
collapse of austrian Hungary
Austria-Hungary collapses at the end of the war. Bosnia-Herzegovina becomes part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. -

The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. -

Along with Slovenia, Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, Serbia becomes one of the six republics that comprise the new Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia under the Prime Ministership of Josep Broz Tito. (The new composition also included two autonomous regions, the provinces of Kosovo and Vojvodina.)world war 2

annexation of Bosnia-herzegovnia
Bosnia-Herzegovina annexed by pro-Hitler Croatian puppet state. Thousands of Serbs, Jews and Gypsies are sent to the death camps. -
independece of Slovenia and Croatia
In response to Slovenia, the Yugoslav army responds with force and over a 10-day period the two countries are at war . The Yugoslav army withdraws. War breaks out immediately upon Croatia’s declaration of independence. The Serbian army joins forces with Croatian Serbs in the east of the country to expel Croats. During this time the Serbs create the self-declared Republic of Serbian Krajina. -
Muslim and and Croat nationalists at war with the Serbs
Croat and Muslim nationalists form tactical alliance and outvote Serbs at independence referendum.
War breaks out and Serbs quickly assume control of over half the republic. Killings and deportations are rampant in the newly-proclaimed Serb Republic, but also widespread in Muslim and Croat-controlled areas. -

December - Dayton peace accord creates two entities of roughly equal size, one for Bosnian Muslims and Croats, the other for Serbs. An international peacekeeping force is deployed -
krstic guilty of genocide
August - Hague war crimes tribunal finds Bosnian Serb Gen Radislav Krstic guilty of genocide for his role in the massacre of thousands of men and boys in Srebrenica. Krstic sentenced to 46 years. -
serbia decided not directly responsible
February - The International Court of Justice rules that the 1995 Srebrenica massacre constituted genocide, but clears Serbia of direct responsibility. -
formation of a new central government
December - Bosnia's Muslim, Croat and Serb political leaders reach agreement on formation of new central government, bringing to an end 14 months of deadlock since 2010 general election. -
Karadzic guilty of genocide
March - UN tribunal in The Hague finds former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic guilty of genocide and war crimes - including genocide over the 1995 Srebrenica massacre - and sentences him to 40 years in jail. -
mladic guilty of genocide
November - Former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic is found guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity during the Bosnian War. He is sentenced to life imprisonment.
