The arrest of montezuma
The conquistadors enter tenochtitlan. Cortes then arrested montezuma, placing him under guard and restricting his movements and meetings. Montezuma agrees without much complaint. He dies under guard on June 29, 1520 -

The night of sorrows
Cortes returned to tenochtitlan on June 23, and decided the situation was untenable. Montezuma was sent out to ask for peace, but was killed by his own people. Cortes and his men decided to try to sneak out, but were caught. Cortes lost half his me, some who were captured alive and sacrificed. -

The battle of Otumba
The new leader, cuitlahuac, tired finishin*of the weekend Spaniards. The armies met around July 7th. The Spanish were losing the battle at first. Cortes rallied his best horsemen and charged at the enemy commander. The enemy general was killed and his army fell into disarray, allowing the Spanish to escape. -

Spaniards rested in Tlaxcala after otumba. Spaniards made plans for final assault. Reinforcements arrived from the Spanish Caribbean, and smallpox out broke in mesoamerica, killing countless natives.
