    The Aztec god Huitzilopochtli commanded that the Aztecs migrate south and told them to look for an eagle perched on a cactus. There they would biuld a great city.

    Finding Tenochtitlan
    The Aztecs spent more than 150 years searching for this land. They travelled over mountain ranges and through river valleys. They arrived at the Valley of Mexico, where many thousands of people livesd. The only unoccupied land the Aztecs could find was a swampy island on Lake Texcoco. There they saw the screaming eagle. They called it Tenochtitlan, and transformed it into a great city.

    The Aztecs had to changing their geograpghy to make it suitable for living. To do thisthey build chinqampas, dams, aqueducts, and causeways. This gave them food, fresh water, and security from invaders. They built temples to bring them to the gods.

    Every 52 years this ceremony would take place. People would fast and let their fires burn out. They waited one rooftops to see the sacredflame lit near Tenochtitlan. A courier would then carry this flame from house to house to relight fires.

    After disease (smallpox) killed a huge portion of Aztecs, the Spanish came back to take over the rest of the Aztecs.

    The Spanish had weapons made of steel. The Aztecs used weapons made of wood and obsidian glass. The Spanish also had horses and huge dogs. The Spanish had a huge advantage over the Aztecs.

    The remaining Aztecs were asslimilated to Christianity and made slaves. Their temples were destroyed, as well as their codices. Their customs and religion was destroyed.

    Cortes was always wanting to go on an adventure. When he heard about the gold Columbus found in the New World, he wanted to get fame and fortune. Cortes set out on an expidition to the New World with 300 or so conquistadors.

    Aztecs believe that mountains physically brought them closer to the gods. They then built temples to replicate mountains. They performed sacrifices in the temples.

    Churches were where Christians and Catholics went to worship their only god. They pray in the churches.
