Mexican Independence From Spain
Who: Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla
What: The people of Mexico wanted independence and Hidalgo shouted his call of action.
Where: Doloores, Guanajuato, Mexico.
When: September 16, 1810
Why: Mexicans wanted freedom from Spain. -
Texas Independence From Mexico
Who: Mexican Government and Tejas Citizens.
What: Citizens living in the area of Texas wanted to be free of the strict Mexican rules.
Where: Mexico, Tejas (Texas)
When: 1836
Why: They did not like the way the Mexicans were treating them, and they wanted to break free of Mexican rules.
So What? It shows how Texas became part of the U.S. and got it's freedom. -
Mexican-American War
Who: The U.S. and Mexico military/government.
What: The two countries were fighting over territory, so they went into war.
Where: California, New Mexico, and the Rio Grande River.
When: 1845-1848
Why: Both countries wanted the states of Texas, New Mexico, and California.
So What? This shows how these states became part of the U.S. and not Mexico. -
Treaty of Guadalupe HIdalgo
Who: U.S. and Mexico governments.
What: The treaty ended the war and Mexico gave up almost half of it's territory. The U.S. paid $15 million.
Where: The city of Guadalupe Hidalgo, located north of Mexico City.
When: 1848
Why: Both countries wanted to end the war and bloodshed, so they came to an agreement.
So What? This shows how America got Texas, California, Arizona, New Mexico, etc. -
The Gadsen Purchase
Who: United States and Mexico
What: The boundary between the U.S. and Mexico extended from the Gulf of Mexico, 8miles north of El Paso and then west to the first branch of the Gila River. This was an error.
Where: Near El Paso.
When: 1853
Why: To end the war, th United States purchased the land in question.
So What? Shows how El Rio Grande now separated the U.S. and Mexico.
