Mexican Independence from Spain
WHO: The Creoles, Indians, and Mestizos from New Spain against people from Spain.
WHAT: Mexican's wanted independence
WHEN: Started in 1810 and ended in 1821.
WHY: People from New Spain resented the Spainards control of high offices and inequalities under the caste system.
SO WHAT: New Spain was tired of Spain ruling them and modernizing the colony. -
Texas Independence from Mexico
WHO: Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and the Mexicans and Sam Houston and the Texans.
WHAT: People from Mexico wanted to stop U.S. immigration into Texas.
WHERE: In Texas
WHEN: Went on from 1830 to 1835 Texans organized a temporary government.
WHY: Texans wnated to be a free government, not being with Mexico or the U.S.
SO WHAT: Texans wanted to be free and eventually gained freedom and became its own government. They then eventually became part of the conferderacy. -
Mexican-American War
WHO: Mexico and the U.S(President James Polk)
WHAT: Meico wanted to conquer Texas but the U.S. wanted them to be free and Polk wanted to expand the U.S.
WHERE: The border of the Rio Grande River.
WHEN: From 1845 to 1848
WHY: The U.S. wanted to purchase New Mexico, California, and Texas from Mexico for 3 million. Mexico declined and Polk was very angry, so he sent troops to declare war on Mexico.
SO WHAT: The U.S. wanted Texas to be free instead of considered a "territory." -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
WHO: Mexico and the U.S.
WHAT: Peace treaty for land.
WHERE: Rio Grande
WHEN: 1848
WHY: Mexico was to give up half of its territory California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, parts of Colorado, Nevada, and Utah. The U.S. in return paid 15 mil.
SO WHAT: Mexicans that lived in the land that was now U.S. were not treated equally, so they converted them to U.S. citizens. The U.S. gained more citizens. -
Gadsden Purchase
WHO: President Franklin Pierce of the U.S. against Minister James Gadsden of Mexico.
WHAT: The U.S. wished to bulid railroad expansion in the west.
WHERE: The Mesilla Valley.
WHEN: 1853
WHY: The U.S. paid 10 mil in return got 30,000 sq mi that runs south of the Gila River, extends east to El Paso and west to California. Fighting over land was now over.
SO WHAT: This purchase resolved an outstanding Mexican-American border issue . This was the final boundary adjusment.
