KING GEORGE
Sydney 1788- King George III sends the first group of convicts to New Holland to found the first colony at Cove. They assumed that the Aboriginals did not own the land and would step aside. Aboriginal people are no longer the only inhabitants. The French were stopped from colonising Australia. We inherited English religion, laws and values. -
BRITISH ARRIVE
1790- January 26th, 1788- British people arrived at Sydney, New South Wales. Developing Sydney, New South Wales for new settlers, immigrants and for convicts. -
NEW GOVERNOR
1806- William Bligh accompanied by his daughter (MARY PUTLAND) arrives as new governor of the colony New South Wales, Gov. for 9 yrs. Then Lachlan Macquarie takes his place. There is a new governor for New South Wales. -
LACHLAN MACQUARIE
1818- Lachlan Macquarie was the first Gov. to give official Anniversary day now known as AUSTRALIA DAY, marking the 30th Anniversary of the arrival of the British. Now we commemorate the landing of the first fleet on 26th Jan 1788.Governor Macquarie also established a male orphanage and other charitable institution including the bible society. He dissmised all the officials who had been in those jobs before the rum rebellion. -
IMMIGRATION
1830- Assisted immigration was introduced. The population grows. -
FLAG
1848- British Governor tries to review transportation to mainland Australia. The colonial response is to create the 1st popular national movement, the anti- transportation league, and produces a prototype national flag featuring both the UNION JACK and the SOUTHERN CROSS. Australia now has a flag. -
TWO SEPERATE COLONIES
1851- British Governor gives into popular demand and separates the new colony Victoria from New South Wales. -
SPORTING EVENTS
1861- Sporting events such as the Melbourne cup was established. An indigenous cricket team was the very first sporting team to tour overseas, performing well against the English cricket team. Sport starts and teams were made. -
AYERS ROCK
1873- English migrant surveyor William Gosse is the first European to see the great sandstone rock formation Uluru, he names it Ayers rock. -
STOLEN GENERATIONS
1886- The stolen generations- Young children from Aboriginal families got taken from their mother and father, some of these children never saw their parents again. These young stolen children actually got some advantages, like educational opportunities. -
FEDERATION
1890 and 1901- Federation- Six separate British self-governing colonies of NSW, Tasmania, Victoria, Qld, South Australia and Western Australia formed one nation. 1st of January the colonies collectively became states of the commonwealth Australia.EFFECT: The federation shaped Australia up and made Australia a successful nation.
