The men were known as Cameleers. Their job was to lead camel trains through the harsh outback of Australia, transporting supplies from cities to remote towns, inland mines, and stations. -

Chinese Miners
Chinese miners arrived at the Australian gold fields around 1854. They were viewed by large sections of the society with suspicion and racism because of their different language, clothes, food and customs. -
Japanese Pearl Divers
About 6,000 Japanese divers worked at the Torres Strait. They were mostly young men. The divers were allowed to stay in Australia, exempted from the White Australian policy.
