Colonization
Great Britian became an Empire by the 1920's. Before that there was an exceedingly high crime there and the prisons were too full. So they had to find somewhere to put the convicts. The solution was Australia, a place that had yet to be inhabited by anyone but its indigenous people. This lead to the colonization of Australia and it becoming a convict colony. -
Indigenous People
When Great Britian arrived at Australia they discovered its indigenous people. The white english men didn't understand who these people were and because they were black and didn't look just like them, they didn't consider them to be people. So they clashed with the natives and the fighting went on for 146 years but it didn't take Britain long to colonize even thought they fought for over 100 years. Once the indigenous people were out of the way, convicts began making a home for themselves. -
Convict Colony
The main purpose of colonization in Australia was because Britain had lost its territory in America and its prisons were filling up too fast so they needed a place to put all of the convicts. This is how Australia became colonized to be a convict colony. The convicts made a functioning colony there with business's and a stable economy. -
Gold Rush

Independence
The British parliment passed legislation allowing the six Australian colonies to govern themselves as part of the Commonwealth of Australia. The Commonwealth was a constitutional monarchy and Australia wrote a constitution and had a Queen so they felt that they were capable of governing themselves.
