The first penal colony came to house and prison their criminals. New Zealand was part of NSW until 1841. -
Making Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania)
Not much people stayed in Sydney. In the 1790s there were sealers in Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land, named Tasmania from 1856).
It became a secondary punishment for people who committed crimes in NSW. It was a separate colony in 1825. -
Changing New Holland( Swan River) Into Western Australia
A British settlement of free settlers came to the Swan River
Two years later the British government claimed all of New
Holland. Britain named it Western Australia. Convicts were sent there for cheap labour to help the economy. -
South Australia Came
South Australia was claimed as a free colony in 1836. It was taken from the southern part of NSW.
