The indigenous Aboriginal and the Torres Strait people were the first people in Australia. There was around 500 000 of them on the continent at the time.
  • Major events/people

Arthur Philips was given the task of setting up agricultural farms, he appointed prisoners to positions of responsibility. They used the imprisoned for free labor, which was enforced by people like Governor Macquarie (1809). January 16, 1818, the British celebrated Australia day, or Invasion Day to the aboriginals, to mark the 30 years the British had been in power.
  • Initial contact

    Initial contact
the British first came to Australia in boats, at Botany Bay. Their reason for going to Australia was being of the overflow of prisoners.
  • Changes for indigenous

They removed the indigenous people from their land forcefully, with mass killings, and put them on reserves and missions. Their cultural practices were denied, and many were lost.
  • How/when did Australia get rid of British power?

Australia signed the Commonwealth of Australia and gained it's separation from Britain. But their freedom was a gradual process.
  • After effects of colonization

An effect of British colonization is that English is the dominant language. Another effect is that Christianity is the main religion. Separating the aboriginals and British caused a decline in economics, since limiting access to healthcare/education/jobs for aboriginals, caused less money to be made by the aboriginals. On the positive side, Australia is a peaceful country and successful in international trade.
