    A RISE TO POWER     ABOUT 700 BC​
    In about 700 BCE life began to change in ancient Greece. Greek cities started forming their own governments. Ancient Greeks began to study science, art, theater, and poetry. A Greek alphabet was created. All of these exiting new ideas would someday make ancient Greece one of the most admired civilizations of the ancient world.

    GOLDEN AGE OF GREECE 500-300 BC​

    The two most well known city-states during this period were the rivals: Athens and Sparta. It was the strengths of these two societies that brought the ancient world to its heights in art, culture and with the defeat of the Persians, warfare. It was the same two Greeks states whose thirst for more power and territory, and whose jealousy brought about the Peloponnesian wars which lasted thirty years and left both Athens and Sparta in dim shadows of their former selves.

    FIRST PERSIAN WAR 499-488 BC​

    The Greco-Persian Wars are a sequence of wars fought between the great empire Persian and the coalition of Greek City-states. It lasted for about half a decade from 499-488 BC. Even as we say Greco-Persian Wars its not always that all of Greece fought against Persian as their strength and authority was much greater.

    THE AGE OF PERICLES 495-429 BC​

    With the threat from the east gone Athens begins a fifty year period under the brilliant statesman Pericles during which time the Parthenon was built on the Acropolis and the city becomes the artistic , cultural and highly developed as well as commercial center of the Hellenic world, attracting all sorts of smart and interesting people and taking command of the other Greek states. Counting their war against the Persians they liberate the Ionian Greek cities of Asia Minor and the Aegean islands.
  • BATTLE OF MARATHON 490 BC

    The War of Marathon took place during the first Persian invasion of Greece, it was fought between the combined forces of Athens and Plataea against King Darius' Persian army. Darius' attempted to invade Greece as he was angered after the Athenians had sent aid Ionia in revolt against the Persians.

    BATTLE OF SALAMIS 480 BC
    It was fought in September 480 BC, the war of Salamis was one of the most significant naval battles in Ancient Greece, between the Greek city-states and their perpetual Island, near Athens. Although heavily outnumbered, and having lost previous two battles, the Greek allied navy was urged by the Athenian general, Themistocles, to engage the Persian fleet into battle again.

    PERDICCAS II 454-413 BC

    Perddicas II was the son of Alexander I, by whom he had four brothers. Perdiccas II married first a woman called Simiche. While some consider her a woman of unknown lineage but probably part of the Macedonian elite.

    ALEXANDER THE GREAT 356-323 BC

    Alexander the great ruled Greece entirely, but when he died his land was split up. The Romans took control of Greece in 146 BC. ​
    Alexander III of Macedon, commonly known as Alexander the great was born to parents King Phillip II and Queen Olympia. Tutored by Aristotle, the prince took charge of Companion Cavalry at the age of 18 and took aid to Phillip in defeating the Athenian and Theban armies. ​

    SPARTA DEFEATED ATHENS IN THE PELOPONNESIAN 431-404 BC

    The Peloponnesian Wars were fought between Athens and Sparta and their respective allies come in two stages, the first from c. 460 to 446 BCE and the second and more significant war from 431 to 404 BCE. With battles happening at home base and on the road, the long and complicated conflict was damaging both sides but Sparta, with financial help from Persia, finally won the battle by destroying the Athenian fleet at Aegospotami in 405 BCE. ​

    Amyntas II 395-294 BC

    Amyntas II or Amyntas the Little, of Macedon, was son of Phillip or Menelaus, brother of Perdiccas II. He succeeded his father in his appanage in upper Macedonia, of which Perdiccas seems to have wished to deprive him, as he had before struggled to wrest it from Phillip, btu had been hindered by the Athenians.
