First Fleet Arrives At Port Jackson
On 26 January 1788 Captain Arthur Phillip sailed into Port Jackson on HMS Supply and raised the British flag to proclaim the colony of New South Wales. With him were the 11 ships that made up the First Fleet.They had moved from Botany Bay [their thought-to-be last destination] to Port Jackson,because of the lack of fresh water, the poor soil and the unprotected bay in Botany Bay. -
The Naming Of Sydney Cove
Sydney Cove [originally named Port Jackson] ,was named after the British Home Secretary, the 1st Baron Sydney (who was later created The 1st Viscount Sydney in 1789). It was the site chosen by Captain Arthur Phillip. -
