The Return of The Voyage of Beagle
Five years later The Voyage of Beagle is finally complete. Darwin spent the majority of his time exploring on land but also spent eighteen months sailing the sea. -
Charles Darwin Conceives The Theory of Natural Selection
Through thousands of observations, all over the globe, Darwin notices similarities among species and differences based on locations. Darwin concluded that population increases cause food shortages and that there would be a competition for food and resources. He coined the idea as "natural selection," a process by which species select beneficial traits for their survival. (Anirudh 5) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfsUz2O2jww&t=14s] -
On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection
Charles Darwin traveled around the world, for five years, on the HMS Beagle and conducted extensive surveys; his findings resulted in the publication of 'On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection' in 1859. (Biography.com Editors 1-8). The principles and theories proposed by Darwin contradicted Christian beliefs. The book introduced the idea that organisms evolve over time, known as natural selection and laid the foundation for evolutionary studies. (continued) -
The Evolution of Plants
Darwin theorized and wrote about the power of natural selection with plants. He published 'Fertilisation of Orchids' in 1862 which detailed how complex ecological relationships resulted in the co-evolution or orchids and insects. (Anirudh 7) The book established Darwin as a leading botanist and ignited interest in the field of study. -
The Concept of Sexual Selection
Darwin publishes 'The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex.' He introduced the idea that, through evolution, humans and apes share a common ancestor. It was originally met with skepticism but was eventually accepted, by biologists, by the mid-21st century. It introduced the idea of sexual selection and physical traits. In sexual selection species compete to be chosen as a partner by the opposite sex leading them to evolve characteristics like moose antlers. (Anirudh 9) -
