The Phonoghraph
The phonograph was invented in 1877 by Thomas Edison. It was the first method of recording and playing back sound. The sound quality of the phonograph was a terrible disadvantage. -
The Gramophone
In 1900, Emile Berliner invented the Gramophone. It recorded on flat discs or records. One disadvantage was that you had to crank a lever to play a recording. The advantage was that there was later a motor installed to keep it steady instead of cranking. The gramophone was an amazing invention for everyone in the era. -
LPs
LP stands for Long Playing record. It was also known as an album. An advantage would be being able to play music for longer periods of time. A small disadvantage to some would be you have to gert certain records for the size of the LP. -
Multitrack Recording
These started being used in recording studios. The idea was by composer, Les Paul. It became very popular when artists like The Beatles and Beach Boys started recording with it. A disadvantage would be that there are so many wires attached to the machine that they would get tangled. -
Cassette Tapes
Phillips developed a popular way to record your own music. It was also a good way to listen to music on the go. A disadvantge was that it was hard to fast foward to a certain part of a song. -
Compact Discs
These were invented in Japan. In 1863, they were released in the US. It took 3 years for CDs to overtake LPs. You could then record songs on the CDs in 1999. It is good having a CD to give someone a gift or listen to music without advertisements. The disadvantage is that the CDs can get skips if you mishandle them. -
Apple iPod
Apple intruduced the biggest hit in music media, the iPod. There has been over 7 different versions of the iPod and all of them are very popular. The advantage is that you can listen to music anywhere you want to and you can connect it to a speaker. You can't take pictures on some iPods and you can only purchase music on iTunes. -
iTunes
Apple released an online music store along with the first iPod. It allows you to purchase and listen to music on any Apple device. It is a great way to promote your music and buy songs that you like. A disadvantage is having to pay for the music.
