First Africans to VirginaA Dutch ship sails into the Virgina Colony. The ship holds the captian, the crew, and is empty except for the twenty plus Africans aboard. The captian of the ship stole the Africans from a Spanish ship. The colonists from VIrgina exchange the captain food for the Africans. The African status of indentured servent of slave was unclear. Records from 1623 -1624 list them as servents, later records show many free blacks, that were assigned land. By 1640 atleast one African was decared a slave. -
