Atoms and the Periodic Table

  • Introduction to Atomic Structure

    Introduction to Atomic Structure
At the start of this unit, we will learn that atoms make up all matter and that atoms are made of even smaller subatomic particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons. We will watch Brain Pop videos and read web articles related to this topic.
As we enter this unit, we will be mindful of our "Guidelines for a Safe Learning Environment" reviewed in class.
  • Period: to

    Atomic Structure

During this week, students will learn that the structure of atom consists of electrons orbiting the nucleus which is a cluster of protons and neutrons. Students will learn the characteristics of these subatomic particles (i.e. size, electric charge) and differentiate between an atom and a molecule.
  • Atoms Stations

    Atoms Stations
In these lessons over the next 3 days, you move throughout stations in the classroom will accomplish the following tasks:
    1. Watch a Brain Pop video on Atomic Structure and complete the given graphic organizer worksheet
    https://www.brainpop.com/science/matterandchemistry/atoms/
    2. Watch a screencast video made by your teacher
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TWn-ZX41uQ
    3. Create a group poster showing the structure of the atom
  • Reading the Periodic Table

    Reading the Periodic Table
Watching this video will help you understand how to read the Periodic Table in order to construct a Bohr Diagram (a diagram showing the structure of the atom

  • Period: to

    Reading the Periodic Table

In these lessons, students will learn to read the Periodic Table in order to determine the structure of each atom. They will use this information to construct Bohr Diagrams and Lewis Dot Structure. Students will also learn how atomic structure can change in the case of atoms becoming isotopes or ions.
  • Periodic Table Families

    Periodic Table Families
In this lesson, students will learn the family or groups of the Periodic Table. They will color a Periodic Table worksheet according to the groups (Alkali Metals, Metalloids, etc). Students will read articles for each group and take notes on the properties of the elements in each group.
  • Period: to

    Organization of the Periodic Table

During this week, students will identify names and describe characteristics of the groups on the Periodic Table (i.e. Alkali Metals, Metalloids, Noble Gases, etc.).
